The Vikings play a lot of the defense we don't need to be running that often. Cover 1 and Cover 3. They do a lot of single high safety and bring their other safety down in the box. When they're taking away the run they bring Harrison Smith down. When they're worried about the pass the leave Harrison Smith back. He can do both. He's an elite safety and great center fielder. He's top 3 at his position. We don't have that. A safety like that allows you to gamble. Plus they get a lot of pressure...which allows them to play press man because they know their pass rush will get there and their DB's won't have to cover forever.

Agree, Harrison Smith is a BEAST! Hell, him alone is probably better than all our safeties put together.

It's not even close. He's a complete safety who can do it all. Defend the pass or run. Play single high or shut down one side of the field. He can even do some man to man. He's not Malcolm Jenkins when it comes to man to man, but he's damn good for a safety. I'd trade 2 1st rounder's for Harrison Smith. He can make up for the deficiencies of Crawley in man to man because the Vikes #2 corner is just as bad on a lot of plays. Y'all should watch some of the film breakdowns on YouTube. They usually breakdown elite teams.

Re: Guido

Harrison Smith is on a whole different level at safety.

+1.

Side note - Rez, did you play some safety in college as well as corner ?

Is your problem with beards or log cabins? Or is it large families?

Nah. I probably should have though. I didn't have high-end, cornerback speed. I was more of a Malcolm Jenkins when it came to speed...part of the reason he got moved to safety in the NFL. If I would have been as committed to the game as I regret not being I probably would have been in that kind of role. Probably not to that level though. Morgan Burnett maybe.

Re: Guido

Now I will say this, I want us to be able to run Cover 1 and 3 more often. I prefer it...but you MUST get pressure. Especially when you're running Cover 1. We ran these two defenses A LOT last year. If you watch some film on a couple of games WR's were flashing open deep, but we got pressure QB's didn't see it.

Why on earth are they trying to fix something that wasn’t broken.

They're running the same defense, they just aren't getting pressure so the QB has time to see those people flash open that flashed open last year too. It's often the same spot. Down the seam on the right side of the field where the safety is supposed to be hovering and making plays. Williams isn't a single high safety in my opinion. He's not consistent at it at least. We should try some Cover 2 and 2-Man under. Cover 6 as well. 6 is Cover 2 on one side and Cover 3 on the other. Crawley should almost always be the Cover 2 side because he's a liability in deep coverage. He holds for no reason.
