Better than '09?

This could be the very best crop of receivers that Brees has ever had to work with. In 2009 he had Colston, Moore, Meachem and Henderson of which only Colston and Moore were consistently reliable.

in '09 the Saints averaged just under 32 points a game. In the first 13 games they were averaging almost 36 points a game before clinching home field and taking their foot off the peddle.

Thomas' has become a dominating receiver. @cantguardmike seems to fit and this is forcing opposing D's to game-plan him, opening up the field for other receivers. In steps Smith, Meredith and Carr (notice I didn't mention Ginn). As these guys have become more adept with the offense, games like Monday night just might become the norm.

The doesn't even include the two headed monster of Ingram and Kamara.

Add in a D that consistently hands the ball back to the offense.

Better than '09? 40+ points a game as a norm? Scary stuff....

Re: Better than '09?

I would like to see a few more turnovers. In 09 you didn’t cringe late in the 4th quarter when the opposing team was throwing the ball trying to put the game away. You looked forward to it.
This year I feel like if we aren’t way ahead or don’t have the last possession we are screwed. Things may change now that Ingram is back and we can control the clock.
Idk if that answers your question or not but that’s the difference.

Offensively? ... it's close.

Defensively? ... we got a long, long way to go. That 09 team had a bunch of ball hawks who were able to consistently create turnovers.

These receivers are getting open ... and catching the ball. Brees' 77.9% completion rate is reflected by that fact.

Re: Better than '09?

I agree with everything except for leaving out Henderson as a major contributor. Henderson was constantly under thrown, kinda like Ginn is now.
Yes, they had and have their fair share of drops, but even M. Thomas can be considered a fumble risk. Yeah I know only what 4 fumbles in his career, But every time he’s makes a reception I cringe when it comes to his ball security

No one is even close to taking it to the house like Sharper.

Re: Better than '09?

One other thing makes this offense even more dangerous than '09, the ridiculous roughing the passer rules. Over the course of the season this will likely add up to 4 or 5 additional scoring opportunties.

Drew was very sharp in '09, he's even better this year to me.

Re: Better than '09?

Ginn Jr undid himself with that ridiculous kickoff play vs NYG. Plus his drops have gotten old & annoying.

Hope Tre'Quan gets the rest of his reps the rest of the season.
