HORSE COLLAR TACKLE has been sacked.

NFL... Bans Horse Collar tackle.

saintswhodi 05-25-2005 09:03 AM

Not many people are happy about this, but I am. It'll be the same as the clothes line or the facemask, it will be a penalty, but some will still do it cause it's instinct. I never thought it was as big a deal as people made it out to be. It's not gonna water down the game or make it pansy, cause not that many guys did it anyway. One guy who used it more than others hurt FOUR people THIS YEAR, 2 with season ending injuries and one, if he wasn't TO, would have been out longer tha the 6 weeks he was. Next, let's hope they get rid of that crap ass cut block or chop block foolishness. But I am glad for the ban. Protect your players NFL.

I didn't see the tackle during the season all that much... I say more facemasking than that tackle.

saintswhodi 05-25-2005 09:16 AM

Exactly. It won't even be missed. One player specifically did it more than others. I don't even recall anyone on our team ever doing it. It's an insignificant rule change that won't effect much at all about the game, unless you are a Dallas fan or a Roy Williams fan.

I'm neither a dallas fan or a Roy fan, but I didn't see too much wrong with the tackle. But it's gone so on with the game.

We need to work out a reasonable situation

Hope this hasn't been posted already.

Just a little more clarification on the rule:

Quote:

Tuesday's only headline at the owners meeting -- if that's the correct term -- was the passage of the new rule that makes the "horse collar'' tackle illegal and subject to a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty and potential fine. By a vote of 27-5, owners followed the lead of the competition committee and outlawed a defender dragging down a ball carrier by the back of the collar, unless he's in the tackle box near the line of scrimmage or a quarterback in the pocket.

The tackle became synonymous with Cowboys safety Roy Williams, because Williams injured three different players last season -- Owens, Ravens running back Musa Smith, and Tennessee receiver Tyrone Calico -- with just such a takedown. Competition committee co-chairman Rich McKay said overall there were six serious injuries league-wide attributable to the horse collar tackle.

"I don't like it being called the Roy Williams rule because he's a good football player and he did absolutely nothing illegal,'' said McKay, the Falcons general manager. "I don't like the perception that it's focused on one guy, because that was not our intent.''

So basically, not in the open field where all these injuries occured is the change.

"What would it take to keep it in New Orleans?" Benson said. "We need to work out a reasonable situation."
What is unreasonable about the situation as it is from Benson's perspective? I know why it sucks from the state's perspective. I can't believe he's actually interested in reasonable.

Quote:

Benson would not say what "reasonable situation" would be needed for him to stay in New Orleans
Of course, not. He can't very well say that the only way he'll stay is if we make him King of Louisiana. He probably wants the deed to the Mississippi river too.

Quote:

Benson brushed aside those comments by saying "lawyers sometimes talk too much,"
Is he just trying to get on my bad side or what? :x

Injuries happen sure... but you need to decrease the risk for serious or career ending injuries. Anytime a player can grab - jerk and twist someone's body in an abrupt manner and can't defend themselves, you are in an increase risk for injury.
