Fred McAfee Chat

Biloxi, Miss.: Do you consider yourself a leader on the team? Why?

Fred McAfee: I most definitely see myself as a leader because I have experience in every situation that happens in an NFL game so other players look to me for advice.

Melissa C., LaPlace, La.: Well, the coaching sessions went well. Would you say that the Saints are fully ready for the season (Super Bowl!)?

Fred McAfee: I feel this team is ready because I feel we addressed several issues including keeping the core of the team intact and giving us a good mix of young guys and vets.

Boom V, Loris, S.C.: How do you think the team looks so far? I was Carolina for the last game and really hope we push our way into the playoff picture.

Fred McAfee: Even though it's early, I still think we look very good. We are out there trying to continue our momentum from last year.

Kurt Y., Chapel Hill, N.C.: What role will you have this year? Do you think you might get some touches?

Fred McAfee: My role this year will be the same as it has been the last several years - work on special teams in all areas.

Al L., Opelousas, La: Who is faster, Donte' Stallworth, Michael Lewis or Devery Henderson?

Fred McAfee: They are all very humble about their speed, but if you ask them, they would say Michael Lewis.

Kensley K, Laurel, Miss.: Mr. McAfee, how many more years do you see yourself being a part of the Saints organization. Just out of curiosity, what do you run in the 40-yard dash?

Fred McAfee: As many years as I can be competitive and help the team...I ran a 4.2 when I first came into the league in 1991, but I haven't been timed in a long while.

Kurt Y, Chapel Hill, N.C.: You've been released and re-signed a few times. Do you expect that to happen again this year?

Fred McAfee: It's highly unlikely, but anything can happen in the NFL, as I have seen over the years.

Mike J., Florence, Miss.: Fred, you're one of the best special teamers in the NFL. Which do you enjoy better, making the big tackle on returns or running one back? Thanks!

Fred McAfee: There are both very satisfying to me. But, if I had my choice, it would be to put points on the board on a long return (or the occasional fake punt!).

Justin V., Frankfort, N.Y.: what is your highlight of your career?

Fred McAfee: My highlight is yet to come ... winning the Super Bowl!

Quinn D., New Iberia, La.: Fred, it's great that you're back with the organization and you have made a great impact on special teams. With that said, watching you run it looks like you see the field a lot better than anyone. Who taught you how to play special teams?

Fred McAfee: I played for some good coaches, including Al Everest, Bobby April and Joe Marciano with the Saints. However, it was a coach named Al Roberts with Arizona, who opened my eyes to how good I could be on special teams.

Kurt Y., Chapel Hill, N.C.: What do you attribute to your longevity as a player?

Fred McAfee: I think keeping a positive attitude and keeping my body in top physical condition.

Markie P., Cowtown, Ill.: Out of any team in the league, which is your favorite to play against and why?

Fred McAfee: Pick any team in the NFC South. It is one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL and a challenge each time we take the field.

Andre S., Houston, Texas: Who are your closest friends on the Saints roster?

Fred McAfee: I'm friends with everyone on the team and I have been close with several of the guys that I have played with on the Saints over the years.

Steve T., Houma, La.: Will you be coming to Houma with the Caravan on June 14?

Fred McAfee: Yes, and I am looking forward to seeing the Saints fans in that area!

Al L., Opelousas, La.: Which team was your favorite growing up?

Fred McAfee: I became interested in the NFL when my cousin, Marcus Dupree, played for the New Orleans Breakers of the USFL and later with the L.A. Rams. I didn't play football until my senior year of high school (I was a track athlete before that).

Mike J., Florence, Miss.: Hey Fred, I've attended all the Saints caravans here in Jackson and it's always a fun time when you and Deuce are here. How do you like the caravan stops, especially in your hometown? Thanks and good luck this season!

Fred McAfee: It's good to get back home so that fans in that area can interact with Saints players, including guys like me and Deuce. Thanks for the great questions and I wish I had time to answer all of them!

RE: Fred McAfee Chat

McAfee may be the most underrated player on this team. The guy takes special team ace to a new level. Anyone see what happened to the special teams last year when he came back? I'd pay this guy to keep going kamikaze on kickoffs and punts until he needs a walker.
