Pete Prisco, of SportsLine.com, reports New Orleans Saints rookie S Josh Bullocks has impressed the Saints coaching staff during offseason workouts. There is a chance he could be the opening-day starter at strong safety. He'll need to beat out S Jay Bellamy to garner the starting job.

i really like Bellamy in run support and lord knows we need run support, so i hope they make the right decision!

the guy is a free safety, if he was to start they will in deed move dwight smith to play corner opposite MM.

THAT MIGHT BE A GOOD IDEA.......

I definitely wouldn't mind seeing Bullocks on the field if he is as impressive as they say he is. Myabe he'll be our Ed Reed...

IF HE IS WORTH STARTING LET HIM. IF IT WILL HELP US IM ALL FOR IT. I THINK IT CAN'T HURT THAT HE IS IMPRESSING THE STAFF.

Being a Free Safety or a Strong Safety in our old system (the one we were trying to have when Knight and Bellamy originally teamed up) isn't all that important. We were going to play a Right-Left system.

I think that Bullocks is ideally suited for that type of system, and it is, in fact, my view as to why he was drafted. It would be great if he could beat out Bellamy. This changes our Safety scheme (from F-S to R-L), gives us more options, and gives us an increase in speed in the middle.

I like Bellamy too, but in that sort of 'he proved he could hack it even though it looked like he was a dud' kind of way.

I say

Let him start if he is ready -- heck maybe we can move Smith to corner -- doesn't he want to play there anyway -- then we would have McKenzie and Smith

By the way -- just read that Bullocks has an identical twin at Nebraska -- Josh really didn't want to come out early but he had better draft prospects and he did not want to compete next year with his brother for position. Plus he was the field general at Nebraska and this will give his brother the opportunity to show his stuff and take over that role improving his draft position.

RE: I say

Yeah, Bullocks sounds like a class guy. Interesting.

4SS, why do you think people are so interested in Smith playing corner? Is the second CB more important than the top Safety position? IMO, it isn't, but I'd be interested in hearing thoughts on that.

Smith would be our best Safety (and maybe our best CB, but McKenzie is proven there). Why not Smith, Bullocks/Bellamy, McKenzie, and Brown/Thomas/Craft? Instead of Smith, Bullocks, Bellamy, and McKenzie?

Just wondering.

No I do not believe the second corner is better than the top safety -- I guess my suggestion is based on I want the top 4 out there at the same time --- Smith has mentioned his desire to move to corner --- If Bullocks is as good as his latest press is I would at least try it in one of the preseason games -- Smith could still call the defensive back defensive plays from cornerback --

RE: Re: RE: I say

Top four on the field. That makes sense to me.

I guess, I'm not sure of Smith as a CB. Does he have NFL experience at CB? I recall he played CB in College, but T-buck played RB in College, and I'm sure as heck not going to endorse him to play RB.

What do you think?

saintswhodi 06-08-2005 11:13 AM

Yes Smith does have NFL experience at CB, thus his desire to return there. As far as I recall, he was decent, better than what we have. But I am of the mindset that he should not be bogged down with the traditional responsibilty a CB has. Maybe a few plays here and there each game. But I am more excited about him out in space as a safety creating havoc. We haven't had a ball hwaking play making safety in several years, and Smith is that guy. Maybe in a 3 wide, he can line up on a receiver if we blitz(which having him at safety allows us the freedom to corner blitz might I add), but let him play safety. And bullocks too if he is ready.

Oh, and I mean better than we have as a CB outside of McKenzie just to clarify.

FS-Smith
SS-Bellamy, Bullock in passing situations
CB-Mckenzie, Brown

Good Secondary now lets tell the staff about that other position on the D that does exist called LB!!!!!

Haha which might be never. Our run defense might be so bad that they'll never have to throw against us.

But I agree, our secondary looks stronger than it has in a long time.

I agree with Kools opinion on Bellamy. He has been a solid defender on the D and has done a good job. I like the fact that he has shown the effort not to give up even when he was thought to be more of a weakness. Thing is, if Bullocks is better, then he needs to play. I would hate to see Bellamy cut because I think he still has it, but if Bullocks is better---better do what is best for the team (and the fans).

JKool 06-09-2005 11:38 AM

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: I say

I don't think they'll be cutting Bellamy. Depth would still be an issue.

Thanks for the background Whodi. It still seems to me that the bulk of his playing time is at FS, isn't it? If so, I say let him play that spot - as I am in full agreement that play making at Safety is a need.

Yeah, does anyone know anything about Williams?
