Prisco: Around the League

Code:

Around the league
There have been rave reviews coming from New Orleans about Saints first-round pick Jammal Brown, a right tackle who is already penciled in as the starter. Brown will upgrade the running game, something coach Jim Haslett wants to do this season. While Brown has been getting all the attention, second-round pick Josh Bullucks has also impressed the Saints staff. There is a chance he could be the opening-day starter at strong safety. The Saints re-signed Jay Bellamy to play there, but while Bellamy is a smart, heady player, he doesn't have great range. Bullucks has already displayed his ability to get to the football. He also can tackle. With free agent Dwight Smith already added to the roster, Saints coaches believe their safety play will be a major upgrade over last season. Cornerbacks Fakhir Brown and Mike McKenzie give New Orleans two quality man cover players, something the Saints plan to do more of in 2006.

Brown wants a new contract and has missed offseason workouts because of that, but the Saints have told him they have other contract priorities. Among them are getting running back Deuce McAllister and center LeCharles Bentley signed to long-term extensions. Brown was told by the team to be patient, and if he plays well early this season he could be in line for a new deal come November or December -- provided the Saints have addressed their other contract concerns. The Saints also brought in veteran receiver Az-Zahir Hakim this week for a visit as they continue to try and upgrade their receiving group. Joe Horn and Donte' Stallworth are the starters and the team likes what it has seen so far from 2004 second-round pick Devery Henderson, but the staff is concerned about potential injury problems to those three. Henderson has the speed to become a big-play threat, but he didn't play at all last season as he spent the season watching and learning.

Quote:

If a team is looking for a quality defensive tackle, they should strongly consider Southern California's Manuel Wright in the coming supplemental draft. Wright, who made himself available for the draft because of academic concerns, is a big-time player. Some scouts are worried he wasn't as productive as he should have been at USC, but he played behind some good players, such as Eagles first-round pick Mike Patterson. Wright was a big-time recruit coming out of Long Beach Poly, but he had to go to junior college before enrolling at USC. He eventually worked his way in as a starter last season when Shaun Cody, a second-round pick this year, moved to end. Wright had a big sack against Cal late and he played well in the Orange Bowl. At 6-feet-6, 310 pounds, he is worth a second-round pick in the supplemental draft. Any team doing so would forfeit their second-round pick in next April's regular draft. He's worth the risk, although he has to get into a situation where the coach stays on him a bit.

I don't think we really need another of this type of player - especially with Sullivan around.

saintswhodi 06-07-2005 12:01 PM

Hey, the sunshine folks are telling me Haslett, Pease, and the rest of the defensive coaching additions are turning this ship around. They say Haslett has finally settled into a groove as head coach. Pease is a master motivator. Based on these feelings, I think Wright would eb a good pick-up, unless none of that is true. I can go either way on this one.

And the moonshiners are telling me that it doesn't matter. The front office sucks, the coaches suck, and the players suck. So it doesn't matter who we pick up, I'm told they'll suck if they come here so why waste the pick in a supplemental draft on a player who's gonna suck, when we can concentrate all the total suckage into one single draft day next year like we normally do?

You really shouldn't talk about WhoDat like that. He resembles those remarks.

Euphoria 06-07-2005 12:21 PM

I am only going to say no to this due to the cost of taking a pick in the supplemental, just don't think its worth it.

WhoDat 06-07-2005 01:12 PM

And I'm telling you all that Danno turns into Grumpy Old Man when you use the word "optimism" or "sunshine" in a post. :)

Wrong, only when you mis-use the word optimism or sunshine.

mayoj 06-07-2005 02:49 PM

how is sunshine correctly used?

saintswhodi 06-07-2005 03:00 PM

Good question. Can we get a class on how to use it properly? I fail to see how it was used incorrectly in this instance.

Danno 06-07-2005 04:00 PM

They say misery loves company, and you guys have enough members to start your own New Orleans Jazz and Pessimist festival. Proceeds could help pay the Saints the money they were promised. You could start you own website, Yack&Fold.com.

I think I just don't fit in around here anymore. I'm gonna try my best to be more pessimistic for a while and see if thats any fun. Could 80% of the posters here be that wrong? I'm gonna find out by switching to the dark side and become more pessimistic, even though I'm sure it probably won't work.

We suck man, we suck!

Ahhh, baby steps!

I'm just a realist, dude!

BlackandBlue 06-07-2005 04:24 PM

We need balance around here, so quit ganging up on Danno.

mayoj 06-07-2005 04:28 PM

Maybe your pessimism about everyone is driving them to be more pessimistic. What a vicious vicious cycle.

The horror!

I just started posting about a month ago bc I sit around all day studying board questions, and I feel like there is a pretty good mix. Someone gets a little too optimistic, and they are brought down; someone gets a little too pessimistic, and they are brought up. I enjoy a little sarcasm in the mix as well to keep things entertaining. Only really bad/pessimistic parts are the long arguments about nothing, very few though.

Pardon me if I am wrong, but did Danno or did he not insert himself into this convo when he wasn't even mentioned? Can't take the heat..............

BlackandBlue 06-07-2005 04:44 PM

Nevermind the other 40 threads....

And this whole sunshiner/moonshiner thing is played out. It's sooooooo 2003. ;)

Insert myself? How'd I do that?

And heat from a pessimist? Thats basically the equivalent of bad breath eh?

Now mind you, this is after I was attempting to make a case for going after the USC player in the supplemental draft. Who is a DT, which we need, to improve the team. But I guess that could be somehow pessimistic and seen as an attack.

So you ridicule optimists, I call you out on it and thats me inserting myself? Hmmm, OK I guess. I'll have to think about that one for a while.
My newfound pessimistic attitude is slowing my thought process down a bit. How do you guys handle it? Do I need a sponser?

After all the battles, methinks that Danno has become quick on the trigger.

saintswhodi 06-07-2005 05:17 PM

Wait, I ridiculed optimists? Boy, check out the big ego on Danno. I have read articles that have said those exact things I posted, about Haz being a different coach and Pease being a master motivator. Or have you not read the artciles with the hype around Sullivan where they specifically mention Haz' new approach and Pease's ability to motivate helping to turn that waste around? Trust me oh great smoke up the asser, if I was talking about you, you would know it. Check your ego at the sign in page next time please.

Yeah, sounds uplifting to me. No sarcasm or ridicule there. Nope not there. All those sunshiners suck. They don't know squat about football. They all just Optimism-Astronauts blowing smoke up Uranus.

How about a realism sandwich, I got plenty leftovers.

Thanks BNB. I sure hope Danno doesn't have a job involving law enforcement. I'd hate to see his bio. Danno- "But Sarge, he was looking at me funny, and said something about sunshine, so I shot him." Sarge-"Danno, the sun was in his eyes." Danno-"Aw well F it. F everything. What a bunch of pansies. Get shot with a little old .45 and they start crying. Well maybe I should be a pansy too. I am only gonna arrest people at night. That's it. Take in the moonshine."

So sunshine, you okay with us trying to get this guy in the supplemental draft or no? Put your ego aside for a second and let's discuss the merits of going after this guy or no.

It wasn't MY ego that needed to take a shot at sunshiners, but OK I've had enough. I do enjoy the witty banter but its getting tiresome.

I'd be OK if we used a 2nd on the guy if he's as good as I've read. I don't know enough about him to know if he's worth our 2nd rounder next year, especially since we don't have a 3rd. But if we do take him, who gets cut? Is he gonna relace a young developmental guy that may contribute this year, only to suck up a roster spot while he develops on the bench?

Since we're already down to a 52 man roster, I'd pass and take my chances next year in the second. Lets see what Leisle, Green, Verndon, Jefferson, Whitehead, Young, and Bryant can bring to the table this year. And we'll be able to cut Sullivan next year. There's also the Howard trade possibilty hanging overhead.

We already have enough developmental guys, so why use a 2nd rounder on a guy who MIGHT be a decent DT in a year or two?

I think I'd pass.

Besides, he'd just suck here.

I think that's the most sense I've read so far... :P From what I've been reading, probably the same things you guys have been reading, he looks like a interesting prospect. But good point made about having so many guys hear already and not having a 2nd and 3rd next year would be disappointing. So basically as much as I am for taking him, I think it would be wise not too also.

saintswhodi 06-07-2005 09:01 PM

Okay, I feel ya'll. Back off the guy. Just a thought.

Understatement of the week. C'mon Danno, just take a deep breath man. You have been mighty testy recently.... I think I've mentioned this earlier.

In the words of the great (and missing) JKool, "Don't make me own you with my eyes!"

JKool 06-08-2005 10:20 AM

I'm here to own you with my eyes! I think that was a Brooks quote, actually...

The moonshiner/sunshiner thing is getting a bit old... as BnB so wisely notes.

More from me shortly.

papz 06-08-2005 10:32 AM

JKool is back from his brief stint on injured reserve. That's right fatty... it's about time you trimmed down some and got back on the field.

JKool 06-08-2005 10:53 AM

Whew, these days it may take more than a few days to get back into game shape... 8)
