Rose Bowl/NFL in LA

I didn't see it posted, so I thought I would share.

Heard yesterday on sports radio in Atl that the Rose Bowl has officially bowed out as a possibility for an NFL stadium. This leaves the Coliseum and a parking lot in Anaheim as the other options.

I'm not saying this rules out LA as a future home, but it seems that the more you hear, they're further from being NFL ready than it had been portrayed originally.

Also......to all the people who defended Benson(which I used to do at least a little bit)....Do his newest quotes not stick in your craw? He contradicts himself and sounds more and more like a greedy, dillusional car salesman. I still think the shot of us leaving is 50/50 just because Benson seems so all over the place. I just like to see his exit options get smaller.

To put the whole thing on the people of la is just cheap in my opinion. These are some of the most loyal fans in the NFL who root for a team that is consensus top 5 in historical and state economic futility. Having the ball put in their court by is a completely classless move by Tom.

Something really needs to been done about the superdome. I've been to several different stadiums around the country and the dome is by far the worst one I've experienced.

All I can say for the dome is it's an extremely large buliding that's in a great city. It's not a fooball stadium. If you want to go to a rock concert, it's a great place. But not for football. Terrible sight lines.

Every time I go to a game in another city I feel cheated when I go back to the dome. Just a terrible stadium to watch fooball. Compared to other stadiums, it's like a 3rd world country!!

I love going to Saints games because of the crowd and it's rowdy environment. But I'd have to agree with nawlins, compared to other NFL stadiums, we have a piece of crap. I honestly rather stay home and be able to see every play on TV. I've never sat on the 50 yard line, but endzone tickets suck. I can never see crap there. Even the TV's in the stadium are too small and the jumbo-tron is blurry as hell.

We do have to look at our situation and realize this city probably can't afford to build another stadium. It would be nice if we could get a retractable roof stadium somewhere, but that's just wishful thinking. I'd rather spend the money we'd consider into an new stadium and use it on renovating the Dome somehow while paying the Saints to keep them here. Wouldn't it be great if we had a billionaire owner would who like to contribute financial means to all this? :|

Maybe I am just lucky but my experiences have been good -- I think sight lines are pretty good --- Granted I have season tickets but they are on about the 10 yard line and I have sat in the endzone once or twice -- I would like a new stadium over rennovations but don't think its the piece of crap everyone else seems to think it is. Also a new stadium would make it tremendously expensive to season tickets because all new stadiums are carrying that seat license crapola

ScottyRo 06-08-2005 10:50 AM

Ok, somebody who might know the answer to my question. Since you bring up sight line, what the heck is it?

I've never watched NFL football in another stadium so I don't know the difference. The games I've been to in the Dome didn't leave me feeling like I didn't see the field well unless I had particularly bad seats. I just don't understand how much different seat placement could be to affect sight lines.

Please explain.

I don't think anyone is going to argue that the Dome is a top notch facility at this point. I've seen the Saints play in the Superdome, GA dome, in Carolina, and at Raymond James. My personal rankings would be 1) Carolina 2) Tampa 3) NO 4) Atl.

Carolina and Tampa's stadiums are both very nice. They are also outdoor stadiums, which should be manditory in this division. The Saints need a new stadium, no doubt. I'm with Tom on that, I just don't know how viable that is over the course of the next few years. I think the Dome could go another five with a plan for a new stadium on the horizon. The problem is....there's no money to build one. The idea of the stadium on the river with a retractable roof had me salivating. I was thinking about season tix and I live in Atl.

I would love to see a plan in place by 2010 for a new building. Hell, call it Benson Stadium for all I care. I could just do withtout the grandstanding. I wish we had an owner like Blank who makes very fan friendly moves and seems to know how to get the people on his side. He's offering to foot the entire bill for the GA dome renovation and he's the one who brought it up. I thought that would send a message to Benson....oh well.

Scotty - line of sight isn't necessarily the right term, but it has to do with the vantage point from which you see the game. Are you up in the stratosphere looking down at ants? In the corners of the stadium, can you still see the whole field (no in the Dome)? Etc.

I've been to a few stadiums and I think there is nothing wrong with the Dome. FYI guys, Benson isn't the least bit concerned with the seating in the nosebleed sections or the number of bathrooms. He is concerned with two things: suites and concessions (and maybe merchandise locations). What do all of those things have in common? Don't guess, I'll tell you. They all directly affect his bottom line. Benson just raised ticket prices by 20-25% (at the least expensive rates). You think he really cares how well the people in the top corners of the Dome can see the game? Does anyone here believe that Saints fans are declining to go to games b/c they don't like the Terrace level seating? Give me a break!

papz 06-08-2005 01:44 PM

When I go, I usually have tickets about 7 rows in behind the goal post. I have a hell of a time getting wasted and trash talking our opponents fans, but the view sucks and it's dark as hell. At least have a clear jumbo-tron so I can see what happens btw the 80 yards going the other way. Heck a 20 inch TV anywhere near that would be satisfactory to me.

I have been around the pressbox areas snooping around and I think those are the best seats in the stadium. Too bad I CAN'T AFFORD it! :(

nawlins 06-08-2005 03:48 PM

Beleive me guys, it doesn't matter where you sit, there is no comparison if you've ever been to a real football stadium. Not even the luxury suites can compare. I've sat basically everywhere in the dome. 50, 40, 30 yardline .. and the endzone. It's not that you can't see the game good from some of those vantage points, but they suck compared to other stadiums.

If you've never been to other stadiums, you might mistake the dome for a football stadium. But those that know better ... know better. I know better. Take my word for it.

I have been to the new Redskins home -- and I think it maybe because of the open air stadiums -- they have a nicer feel to it -- but the view of the game itself was not as much of a difference besides that. ( I have been to the Atlanta stadium and belives it sucks -- I have been to the Panther's stadium and must admit its pretty nice

AllSaints 06-09-2005 12:38 AM

A new staduim would be so awesome. but money dosen't grow on trees unfortunetly...

TheDeuce 06-09-2005 02:53 AM

True that AllSaints. I would be all for building a new stadium. However, I'm not sure that a few million consituents of the great state of Louisiana who aren't as crazy about the Saints as we are would prefer to build a football stadium over building better schools and paying teachers. Like you said, money doesn't grow on trees.

mayoj 06-09-2005 08:11 AM

Deuce, I agree with you about the constituents not wanting to spend the money on the Saints, but they sure as hell aren't looking to spend that money on the schools and teachers. Over the past 20 years, numerous legislation aimed at created money for schools has created the cash flow, but much of that does not find its way to the school. Where does it go??? That's the big question. Looks like we found out with Edwards.

We don't have much money to begin with as a state. That fact comboed with the "leaky pipes" as the money trickles down to its final destinations and we get Louisianna. hoop

WhoDat 06-09-2005 08:42 AM

You guys are right - the Super Dome is a terrible place to watch football games - that's why the NFL has selected it to host the most (9) Super Bowls in league history.

Are you guys related to Tom Benson?

When I sit in the endzone it's hard to see what's going on when play is at the opposite goal line. Wah wah. Right, whereas at Soldier field a helicopter picks up the opposite endzone seating and holds you in a hover 5 yards behind the play so you can see better.

I just... oh nevermind.

progress 06-09-2005 03:42 PM

Woo hoo! Thanks WhoDat.

Since this topic was originally the rose bowl, I'd like to remind everyone that the Rose Bowl was finished in 1922 and the LA coliseum was finished in 1923. So how is it that a building thats 1/3 of the age of the Rose Bowl and the LA coliseum is now in a state that people are saying the building is beyond rennovation. I just don't get it.

I love the Dome, and I've been in plaza endzone for the last two years. Give me a bigger clearer Big Screen and some sort of drainage system to keep the urine off the floors in the bathrooms and I'll be happy for all eternity. Is there urine on the floors in the new football stadiums? And I wouldn't mind some of those state of the art toilets with the plunger built in so I don't walk into a stall where the toilet is clogged with tp.

WhoDat 06-09-2005 03:57 PM

LOL. At Soldier Field you can just piss in your pants and 3 beautiful women will come give you a sponge bath and dress you in silk, feed you filet mignon from Gibsons... owners in bigger cities can provide these types of luxuries to their fans for $55 a ticket - it a matter of economics, you poor ignorant bastards down in the South wouldn't understand, so I'll save my breath.

stockman311 06-10-2005 01:39 PM

The Dome rules! I love it. I live in Dallas. TX stadium sucks! I would take the Dome over that pile of dung any day of the week. The Dome is part of our skyline. I get excited when I see it when I come in from out of town. The view of the game is fine everywhere but the upper upper decks. If they put two new state of the art Jumbotrons in there I would never gripe about a game there again.
