Sean Payton wants Saints' crowd to cheer at specific time to take away Rams' strategic edge

Sean McVay did something last season, his first as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, that was a loophole and rather brilliant.

NFL coaches can communicate with the quarterback through a speaker in the quarterback’s helmet until 15 seconds are left on the play clock. Then it shuts off. But by hurrying to the line, McVay could check out the defense and then tell quarterback Jared Goff what play will work against it. It was a completely legal strategic edge.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton can’t do anything about the Rams trying to call audibles through the quarterback’s helmet early in the play clock. But he had his own idea to make it harder in Sunday’s NFC championship game.

Sean Payton wants noise as soon as the previous play ends.

Interesting that the crowd always gets louder as the huddle breaks and time winds down, when the coach is already blocked out

This move is brilliant

I love how Payton has included the crowd in his game plan.

A similar thing actually sorta happened during the NFC Championship game in the Dome against the Vikings, although not with the specific thing about the headsets. But during the end of the Vikings game, people were screaming their lungs out and making noise, even during the breaks and TV timeouts. The result was the Vikings couldn't communicate and they got a crucial penalty for 12 men in the huddle, which actually pushed them out of field goal range. A play or two later was the famous Tracy Porter interception.

I've always kinda wondered, why doesn't the crowd get loud as soon as the opposing offense starts their huddle?

Seems like that's when they need to hear the most.

We have an intelligent fan base they cheer for the defense and quietly support the offense. Some announcers are amazed at how quiet we get pre snap.

Here in Indy Peyton Manning got on the crowd for being too noisy while he was "conducting". After that you could hear a pin drop while he was at the line.
