Considering the site where I found this info, I'm searching for a reliable link. I'll post one if/when I come across it.

If this is true, he must have heard of Jason Craft's improvement.

As promised...a link.

Brown In McKenzie Out
WWL's Kenny Wilkerson reports that Fahkir Brown has reported to the Saints mandatory offseason mini-camp and is working with the team.

On another note Kenny mentions that Mike McKenzie is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Didn't MM have a Hamstring injury last year and held out until green bay traded him?

Saints DB Brown ends holdout
Posted: Friday June 10, 2005 4:09PM; Updated: Friday June 10, 2005 4:09PM

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The New Orleans Saints returned to full strength at cornerback Friday when Fakhir Brown ended his holdout and reported for the first day of a two-day mandatory mini-camp.

Brown, who started the final 10 games last season, unexpectedly skipped 13 voluntary coaching sessions because he wants a new contract to replace the final year on his existing deal.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said the team would not consider negotiating with Brown as long as he was absent.

"I planned on being here all along," Brown said. "This is mandatory. This is where I want to be. Hopefully, something gets done. I don't regret anything I did. I want a new deal. But I've got to take care of business. I know the starting job isn't mine anymore. I know they had to move on. I understand that. Hopefully, I can earn it back."

Brown's absence created more opportunities for Jason Craft and Fred Thomas, who lost his job to Mike McKenzie last season.

Coach Jim Haslett said he was pleased to see Brown back on the field.

"I think it's good for our football team, it's good for him. He made the right move."

McKenzie also is looking for a new contract, but he has been participating in the off-season work. He held out with Green Bay last season, then reported shortly before being traded to New Orleans on Oct. 4.

"The contract is not an issue right now," McKenzie said. "I've been here throughout so right now everything is on pace. Everything should be squared up. I'm pleased as of right now."

McKenzie started 10 games and had four interceptions as the Saints won their final four games last season.

"I know there have been talks and I know that he's pleased up to the point of where it's at," Haslett said. "I know he's here, he's working really hard. I know the kid is a heck of a football player and he wants to be here and help us win a lot of games. That's the most important thing to me. I know his demeanor on the field has been outstanding."

Thomas is trying to regain a starting position after foot and ankle injuries and personal problems contributed to a sub-par season last year.

"It was a disappointment," Thomas said of his losing his job. "Everyone in this organization, as well as myself, had high hopes for me. It just didn't work out that way with the injuries and also personal issues. I came here this off-season to prove myself and now I'm focused on getting back to my old form of 2002 and 2003."

Thomas was the Saints' most consistent cornerback in 2002 and 2003, starting all but three games and making nine interceptions.

"Last year we had different starters each week, now we have continuity," Thomas said. "We know everybody's roles. We're confident with what's going on."

Craft is a good cb, should not be overlooked.

JKool 06-10-2005 06:30 PM

I hope Thomas has resolved his off-field problems. That too will help us.

FireVenturi 06-10-2005 06:36 PM

for once i disagree with Euphoria. I think craft was terrible last year. I think he is a decent backup, but should not be considered as a starter. I hope as always he proves me wrong though

nawlins 06-10-2005 08:41 PM

This is great news to me. Fakir is a very physical CB. Great news!!

I used to think so too, but last year just made me cringe. Maybe the old Fred will be back this year. I hope anyway.

Euphoria 06-11-2005 09:10 PM

yeah... this is great news, plus shows that his heart is in the right place. I mean show that ya want new contract but also show the team and fans you're here to play.

mayoj 06-11-2005 09:24 PM

I read somewhere he didn't practice. He has the heart to show up but not practice? Or was it maybe more driven by fines?? Hmm

It'll be interesting to see where he ends up at the beginning of the season.

Euphoria 06-11-2005 09:38 PM

no it was McKenzie who was there and not working out, hamstring bothering him.

spkb25 06-11-2005 10:21 PM

i thought craft had problems at the beginning of last season but towards the end of the season he started to come on. but i like that brown is in and hope that MM is back soon. man i am starting to feel it for this year. im probably a fool

mayoj 06-11-2005 10:35 PM

This site's article on mini-camp said craft and thomas were the only two to practice.

The day began with cornerback Fahkir Brown reporting to the Saints' mandatory mini-camp which is the only mandatory practice of the off-season. General Manager Mickey Loomis has said repeatedly that he will not negotiate with players who hold out from team business. Brown’s appearance says that he’s come to make a deal. Brown, projected as a starter, is the lowest paid of the cornerbacks. Although Brown was present at the mini-camp, he didn’t participate. Cornerback Mike McKenzie also did not practice, so Cornerbacks Fred Thomas and Jason Craft took most of the reps.

Craft looked the sharpest of the cornerbacks. On one play he broke on a ball thrown on a simple out pattern and intercepted the Aaron Brooks pass.

It may be nothing, but that made me think he was only there bc he would get fined. I've heard him speak otherwise, so hopefully it's nothing.

Spkb, if you are a fool than so am I. I really feel good about this year. Brown shamed himself a little, but I'm glad he is back. He really did a good job towards the end of last season. I hope he isen't behind because he missed some voluntary workouts. I'm not totally sold on Brown yet, though. He played well, but I would like to see him continue playing like he did late last season and secure the #2 corner again. If not, we always have Thomas and Craft. I hope the D can stand up and at least be a contender this year. Say it how you want to, but there is no way we are going to get worse. With the addition of D. Smith, having MM in all season, and the (hopefully) continued improvements of Brown, Buckwoldt, Watson and our DE's should at least give some Offenses some trouble. Fincher and Bullocks are making strides and give us a little more depth and some different looks. Heres to hoping this is a good year Spkb.

Euphoria 06-12-2005 11:29 AM

what did I say... keep your eye on Craft
