So why won’t Cowboys owner Jerry Jones extend the contract of coach Jason Garrett? There’s a theory that has been percolating throughout Super Bowl week in Atlanta, and that surely will become one of the major points of interest throughout the 2019 season.

The theory goes like this: The Cowboys part ways with Garrett after his contract expires, and the Cowboys lure Sean Payton from New Orleans to Dallas in 2020.

It may be easier said than done. The Cowboys would need to compensate the Saints for allowing Payton to leave, and that compensation likely would include at least one draft pick. The Cowboys also would have to pay Payton, who likely would expect (and rightfully so) eight figures per year, at a minimum.

But those are simply details for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who likes to boast about the size of the check he’d write to win a Super Bowl. With Garrett routinely criticized for having a bare-bones and vanilla offense and with Payton at the other end of the spectrum, constantly looking for ways to improve and diversify his attack, maybe Payton is the missing ingredient for Jones, who continues to search for that elusive blast of football glory.

"When you get into one of these groups, there's only a couple of ways you can get out. One, is death; the other, is mental institutions."

The annual false hype begins ...

No way in Hell would Payton go anywhere where he doesn't have FULL say in personnel ... and all other matters.

Might not be the worst thing. Let’s say Brees retires after 2019. If Payton’s ready to move on see if we can get a 1st round pick from Dallas for him. Then we’ll have two 1st round picks to move up and get our next franchise QB in the loaded 2020 QB class (Fromm, Herbert, Tagovailoa, etc.)

I think Sean will be here as long as he's successful and as long as the Saints want him. I'm happy with our coach and wouldn't trade him for any amount of draft picks at this point.

I'm with you jnormand! He's the best coach we've ever had and he's not going anywhere soon.

Payton isn't stupid. He's got a thoroughbred behind center and he's going to ride him until it's time to put him out to pasture.

I hate to say it but jerry is looking like if he gets hit by a stray football he’s going to crumble like crispy saltines

Ill finish that thought for you.

... all of that and no coach.

Lets not lose sight of the fact that Sean Payton brought success to New Orleans, New Orleans didn't give it to him and the lat seas n that we didn't have him on the field we went 7-9 in 2012. That was 7-9 WITH Brees on the field.

Yea, I would say history has shown that is a very high probability of being the worst thing.
