Re: Source: Alex Okafor's contract to void in March

BY NICK UNDERHILL | nunderhill@theadvocate.com Feb 8, 2019 - 3:56 pm

Alex Okafor's contract was updated in late December with language that automatically voids his the final year of his contract, according to a league source.

The Saints defensive end earned the right to opt out of his contract by finishing with three sacks. The reach free agency, his contract previously stated that he had to give written notice to the club.

The language changed in a December renegotiation which was executed to pay Okafor a $400,000 sack bonus even though he came up one shy of reaching the five needed for it to be paid out. Instead of saying Okafor could opt out with written notice, a source said it now reads that the contract will automatically void on the last day of the league year in March, ahead of the opening of free agency.

Okafor initially signed with the Saints in 2017 as a free agent and picked up 4 1/2 sacks before suffering a torn Achilles in November. He managed to make it back for the start of the 2018 season, though it took some time for Okfaor to regain the explosiveness that had him off to such a good start the year before.

The veteran defensive end re-signed with the Saints ahead of the 2018 season.

The Saints will return Cam Jordan, Marcus Davenport and Trey Hendrickson at defensive end. Davenport recently underwent surgery on a Grade 3 turf toe and is expected to be fully ready in time for training camp.

It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

I’d love to have him back, but we have so much invested in the D-Line already (monetarily and 1st round picks.) Let him see what’s out there when FA starts and be sensible in our offer. We may need a starting DT or two so prioritize that.

In cases where you'd like the veteran back, even though he knows it's Davenport's job, it's better to let the market set his price - and if it's not a reach, you offer him a deal...

That way he comes back with no resentment to a place he can call home - he'll have no reservations giving you max effort, reinforcing the team-first philosophy...

But the priorities will be Davison (or his replacement) and another DT3 with Rankins out, yet again, to, at the least, start the season, if not more...

I would agree that DT is the top priority on defense, but we can get real thin, real fast at Defensive End, so it is a priority right there...

Yes, when the Saints agreed to pay him for the sacks clause when he fell just short, it gave his camp the option to void his contract...
