Saints interested in signing Johnnie Morton.
 

AP reports WR Johnnie Morton is drawing interest from San Francisco, New Orleans and Tampa Bay, each of which has a need for a wide receiver. Morton is older, but he still could help each of those franchises.

He's not too bad... I wouldn't mind us giving him the veteran's minimum salary to see what he has left in the gas tank. It looks like maybe the Saints don't have that much faith in Devery's hands... they have been trying to sign a veteran for the past couple of months.

This is what I don't understand. Why wouldn't we bring in a guy like Jerry Rice to help teach our young receivers. Not to rely on him as far as our offense goes, but as kinda a player coach. You can't tell me he couldn't take Talman Gardner's spot. Seriously? Why wouldn't we have brought in Jerry to teach them about work ethic, and attitude, and route running, things he excelled at. We didn't have to count on him on Sundays, but the knowledge he could have passed could have helped our receivers a lot. I guess Morton would help, but if we are going after an old veteran, why not the best ever? At least from the teaching our young guys standpoint.

I agree with you whodi. And Devery... its not that its having faith in him yet... young WR takes sometime to develop. You can't come in and expect to start your first year are two. Usually it takes 3-4 years, rare exceptions come out and have a great year there first outing.

I think Rice was only interested in staying on the left coast. Besides Horn should be able to fill the "old veteran" role on this team. :lol:

Very good idea on Rice. It can still happen... remember Shanahan didn't promise Jerry a roster spot and only gave him the minimum. There is a possibility he will be released at the end of camp and maybe if we are smart enough, we can make this happen.

Yea that's true Euph... looking back at the previous draft classes, Michael Jenkins, Reggie Williams, David Terrell, Rashaun Woods, Brandon Lloyd, Bryant Johnson, etc... haven't exactly established themselves yet. I guess there are only so many Michael Clayton's and Boldin's out there. Joe Horn didn't develop until 4 or 5 years after. Hopefully though, he will be able to contribute something this year... unlike the last. He was a very good kick/punter returner in college, maybe we'll get to see some of that speed on special teams.

Because we (saints fans) dislike Rice because he is a great HOFamer who killed us over and over!!!!!!!!!!

Remeber this about Johnny Morton: his younger brother Chad was traded from the Saints, and from what I remember, Chad wasn't too happy with the Saints for trading him. I'm not saying the Saints arent interested in Johnny, but it wouldn't surprise me if he isn't interested in the Saints, unless they want to overpay for him.

What's going on Scott? Chad left us and I know he went to New York afterwards, I wonder where he is now? I think it was 2002 in New York when he had a great year, but I think he played mostly Kick Return and not as much punt return.

Johnnie Morton must be getting up there. I can't remember when he entered the NFL but he must go back to the early 90's.
