Why did Teddy Bridgewater turn down a starting job to stay with the Saints?

The Miami Dolphins offered Teddy Bridgewater some things the New Orleans Saints could not: A chance to walk into the 2019 season as the starting quarterback and a chance to play in his home town.
Still, Bridgewater chose the Saints, signing a one-year, $7.25 million contract that could net him as much as $12.5 million if he hits performance incentives. Why? Bridgewater explained his rationale Friday (Mar. 15) in a teleconference with reporters. https://i.nola.com/resizer/THnApvwyR...VLXVP62QZ4.jpg First, his age: “I’m still 26 years old,” Bridgewater said. “The way I look at it is that I’ll have another opportunity to start in this league at some point.” Second, the resources and the opportunity to be a part of something big: “I get to compete (with) and learn from a guy who is going to be a Hall of Famer (Drew Brees), to get to be a part of a team that was a call away from being in the Super Bowl, I get to be a part of a team and a coaching staff that grinds on a daily basis, that spends numerous nights at the facility to make sure the players are in the best position to win.” Third, an offense with a track record: “You look at what this offense has done over the past decade, it’s like, shoot, everything’s right there. It’s proven, it’s a proven offense, it’s a proven staff. Of course, it didn’t just happen by just rolling the ball out there.” There also, of course, is the little matter of a potential succession plan. Brees turned 40 years old in the days before the NFC championship and does not yet have a clear idea of when he may retire. Unfortunately there is also the very possible scenario that he does not have high confidence in his knee. If that was the case then being a high priced backup might be the smart move. If he starts on a short term contract he will take a lot of risk to reinjure it. If he plays as a backup he gets a year of safe money and can likely string together a few years if brees does not elect to retire younger than Brady does. Playing it year to year, he also has the chance to get the protection of a long term contract before testing the knee a lot. I know it may sound stupid, but it could really be smart money. The Matt Flynn route can be a lot more lucrative than the rg3 route over time.

I believe bridge is going to get a lot of mop up duty to spare Brees wear and tear over a season . To help build his portfolio for the future. Brees has to start sitting when games are put out of reach in the 4th qtrs of all games in our favor or not

It’s pretty well known that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross loves Tua Tagovailoa and wants the team to do what it takes to get him next year. Why would Teddy agree to be a one-year bridge QB?

You're gonna see a few more retirements, trades as Payton's rah-rah locker room speech becomes empty, again... Got to get a new GM. That GM and the owner needs to light a fire under Payton's ass, by putting him on the same year-to-year deal like many of the players; then you'll see a marked improvement in his performance... |
