#1 WR of the Future???

Here's a question for you guys. Someone responded to one of my posts saying he did not think Stallworth is a #1 type wide receiver.

Soooo.........

Who IS our number one wide receiver of the future?????

Henderson is a Donte type wide receiver and Lymann is an injured type wide receiver. The jury is still out on whether Tallman will even develop, and the others I don't even consider thought: Lewis is getting old, Poole ???, Hakim is a punt fumbler with speed.

It seems outside of Poole's below avg speed and great hands, ever other WR has great speed and suspect hands. Have the saints overlooked the future or do they believe Stallworth is the #1 WR of the future or am I missing something???

FireVenturi 06-18-2005 07:58 AM

as of this moment we dont have a future #1 WR!!

AllSaints 06-18-2005 08:14 AM

stallworth is a possible no.1 but depending on injuries and getting more consistent we will see.

Danno 06-18-2005 08:49 AM

I think Stallworth has the potential to be a number 1, no question. If he continues to build on the tougness he displayed last year.

papz 06-18-2005 09:45 AM

Stallworth has everything you look for in a #1 receiver except the consistent hands. He isn't afraid to take a big hit over the middle and he has the gamebreaking speed to take any pass to the house. If he can continue to make improvements with his hands as he has been doing for the last couple of years, I don't see why he couldn't be a #1 receiver. The question is who will be his complement receiver...?

Euphoria 06-18-2005 09:57 AM

I have to disagree... after seeing him in camp, he's a good WR. I think suited for #2 at best... not that is a bad thing. He's style is the sppedster spread the defense type WR. I think that isn't the "go to" WR, like Horn. I don't think we have a #1 in development right now. We have role players and then there backups in case someone gets hurt. Can Stallworth fill Horns shoes NO. Can Hakim, maybe for a bit. Can Henderson fill Stallworths shoes, NO. Can he stand in and be ok, maybe. Do we need a future number 1 WR in camp developing, not really. Chances are he'll run first shot at FA. Snagging one when we need one in FA when we need one is good.

papz 06-18-2005 10:18 AM

We really can't say he can't fill Joe's shoes... he's never had the oppurtunity to do so yet. As of right now, obviously he can't. But in a couple of years or so, I don't see why he couldn't. Who would have ever thought Joe would have become a #1 guy? He's still developing and we still have Joe for quite a while. With that said though, I agree there is nothing wrong with being a #2 either.

Euphoria 06-18-2005 12:08 PM

well they brought Joe in to be the number one guy now didn't they... well it was Mueller's doing.

CheramieIII 06-18-2005 01:05 PM

I would have to agree with several of you, Stallworth has the potential, but our future number one WR is not on the team yet.

papz 06-18-2005 01:45 PM

Joe Horn started 2 games in 4 seasons with the Chiefs... who knew he was going to pan out as a number #1 receiver for us. With 53 career catches prior to his signing... no one would have imagined he would have been such a star for us. He got an oppurtunity and capitalized on it. Stallworth hasn't had that oppurtunity nor will not need to as long as Joe is here allowing him to continue to develop into that guy.

At this stage in Stallworth's career (3 seasons), he's already surpassed was Joe did in KC. Joe didn't develop until season 5... the year we signed him. Judging by the way he's been improving every season, he certainly has the ability. If we didn't believe he could be a number one guy, we wouldn't have drafted him so high in the first round. Give it some time... I believe you are the only always saying it takes years before young receivers develop fully. He's still only 25. He had 58 catches and almost 800 yards starting only 10 games last year, a number which he definately can and probably will improve on in his 4th year. An injury-free year and improved hands will definately allow him to open eyes around the league this year.

Euphoria 06-19-2005 11:23 AM

Stallworth is a roleplayer

TheDeuce 06-19-2005 08:35 PM

We don't have a future #1, Joe Horn is all we got in terms of superstars at the WR position.

Euphoria 06-19-2005 09:17 PM

ture

WhoDat 06-20-2005 10:16 AM

For me to believe that Stallworth can be a number 1 WR, he needs to step it up big-time this year. He needs a 1,000 yard season. Then I'll believe it.

Danno's right that he has all of the things you look for in a #1 WR, but he hasn't put it all together yet. I fear that he might always be a really talented #2. I think in the end, the Saints will sign someone to take Horn's place in FA. But who knows?

Euphoria 06-20-2005 10:20 AM

Yeah so far I agree when it comes time to replace Horn we'll end up getting a #1 WR via FA.

AllSaints 06-20-2005 07:33 PM

1,000 yrds and 10 Tds would prove stallworth is #1 with 100 catches and no fumbles.

papz 06-20-2005 09:51 PM

You mean between 70-100 catches, 1,000 yards receiving, 7-12 touchdowns, and 0-5 fumbles. Because if you go by your stats, there wouldn't be too many #1's out there. Joe Horn hasn't had a 100 catches season yet... and I'm pretty sure he's fumbled before.

Judging from the numbers Stallworth has been improving on every single year, it's just a matter of time before he proves you all wrong. Have a little faith in the guy... he's a Saint as far as I recall.

blackwidows 06-21-2005 03:35 PM

Joe Horn will be a Saint for 6 years so It is to early to go off worry about the future. Stallworth still has two more years on his contract this year and 2006 season. I don't think we will resighn stallworth unless he has a 1,000 season before his contract is up. Stallworth did prove he could keep from being injured he was not injured for too many games last year.
If you remember correctly each time Joe Horn was injured Stallworth had a monster game. Bye the way as far as fantasy football goes when the Saints play Dallas it might be a good idea to start stallworth. Stallworth tends to have a touchdown and a 100 yard receving day each time the Saints play dallas look up the stats you will see that each time the Saints played Dallas he had 100 some yards and a touchdown. My point in Dallas ans Stallworth agument is this is Joe Horn is injured Stallworth usually steps up and has a 100 yard receiving day. The reason may not know this is because you don't get that involved in your stats. I HAVE SPREAD SHEETS ON GAMES DATING BACK TO 85 AND I'M ONLY 27. Bye the way i'm looking forward to a shutout this year the Saints have not shut out a team since 95 when they beat the Jets 12-0

Euphoria 06-21-2005 05:27 PM

To bad Stallworth and Horn wasn't playin in 85. If Horn hurting yeah he'll get everything thrown at him if he can get open. 5 games with 100 or more yards... verdict is still out. He has to deliever that almost every game, play thru injury. Even if he gets 70 catchs and avg. 100 yards or so... doesn't make him a number one you also have to look at why... maybe they are covering him differently because of Hakim, Horn ect.

papz 06-21-2005 07:23 PM

It's like you don't want to see the guy succeed. That's pretty sad. I still can't believe that you are the guy that is always... I mean always talking about give receivers time to develop. Look how horrible Javon Walker was his first 2 years in the league... couldn't catch a basketball if you threw it at him. Now look what he's doing... notice how Driver (it also took Driver a 3/4 years) got injured for just a bit and Walker thrived. Now they make a deadly 1-2 punch. Look at how horrible Joe was... look at the time it took for Hines Ward to develop. Go ahead an check out their performance and you'll see it's looks like Stallworth is headed in the right direction. I bet he'd be even better if he didn't sustain those injuries so early in his career, but that's just my opinion.

Other examples... Troy Brown, Tim Brown, Drew Bennett, Derrick Mason, etc... I can go on and on. Doesn't look like a bad list does it?

Give Stallworth a break... I bet everyone was thrilled the day he was drafted... and now so quick to give up on his talent. You would be lying to yourself if you said the guy doesn't have the physical makeup to be "the man."

4saintspirit 06-23-2005 03:43 PM

I think Stallworth can be the #1 receiver in the future -- I think he really came on at the end of last season -- and if he can put together a whole season we will be okay --

WHODATNJ 06-23-2005 03:58 PM

How mary teams have more than one WR with over a 1000 yards?

papz 06-23-2005 04:09 PM

A lot.

TheDeuce 06-23-2005 05:09 PM

Yeah 5 is a lot.....

Euphoria 06-23-2005 05:13 PM

I don't think you can look at that kind of stuff, its more whether what system you have and can the WR be the guy to fit that system.

Stallworth in Horn place adequite replacement for a few games maybe but to keep and hold the position for a couple of years... I don't think so. Stallworth type player needs someone to complement him on the opposite side.

papz 06-23-2005 05:56 PM

That's not counting Minnesota and Seattle last year... GreenBay etc...

AllSaints 06-23-2005 08:08 PM

i dont think stallworth can get 1000yrds with Horn there.

WHODATNJ 06-23-2005 08:16 PM

The reason I brought it up is because it isnt very common to have two recievers with over 1000 recieving. If Joe is Aarons go to guy so he favors him. If there was no Joe who knows.
