Where are you going to go, Erik McCoy?

This is the big topic in the days and hours leading up to when the New Orleans Saints made their aggressive push to the No. 48 overall pick to select McCoy in the 2019 NFL Draft. The multiple answers to this question may provide a glimpse into why New Orleans felt so strongly that McCoy was their guy.

Where would he go, minor: McCoy needed to find a place to host his NFL draft watch party. His mother presented him with Buffalo Wild Wings or a ballroom at the local Marriott as potential options, but McCoy’s idea for a venue was more true to who he is.

Where would he go, major: What team would he start his NFL career with? This question loomed, the one with an answer he could neither control nor discern, but that was the whole point of this gathering anyway, wasn’t it? All those loved ones wanted to converge around him to be there when he found out.

Could he land with the Dallas Cowboys, the team his father grew up following religiously? Could he go all the way out to the West Coast to Seattle, wearing the Seahawks logo mom and dad alarmingly eyed on the TV screen before his phone lit up?

Could his mom’s prayers be answered?

Excellent value/pick on Erik.

As another story on The Advocate suggests ... NFL executives rarely miss when it comes to drafting centers early.

He has experience playing guard while at TAM but according to Payton, he's our center for the foreseeable future.

Nice.

Expensive, but necessary need-based pick; pardon the pun, but I hope he's the real McCoy or Drew's retirement may come on very suddenly, though he did well against the elite in the draft class.

Goes to show the shift in the Saints FO value at Center. Our Guards are no where near the level of what we had with Evans-Nicks, so we can't get away with Brian de la Puente-level talent at Center...

The real head scratcher, and the question none of the local media is asking - with the difference in guaranteed money between Kelemete and Easton only being $1mil, why didn't we just extend Kelemete last year?!?

We'd had a healthy LG for the Rams playoffs game and a reliable, trusted lineman at Center now; plus, we there'd been less pressure to move up to make the McCoy pick, leaving more options in this draft...

It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

He will be.

The Saints graded the center position HIGH & coveted (offensive MVP at TAM) the player. You just don't hear that praise on a regular basis for centers.

Our pick makes perfect sense to me given the retirement of Max Unger.

I like the aggressiveness of the Saints front office .

Hopefully Saints can persuade Unger to come back for OTA's, mini camps, traing camp and preseason to coach/mentor our rookie center and his backup.

Reports at the time said Kelemete was hoping to stay with the Saints, but he was also looking for a starting spot, something the Saints couldn't offer him.

Center and RT locked down for years. Hopefully, Armstead and Peat can give Drew one more healthy year.

I heard the same thing. He deserved a chance to start, but our roster was too strong.

He's impressive to watch on film because he is so athletic with a nasty streak to finish off blocks. He should be the anchor in the middle for at least a decade that we need to protect Drew in his final years and giving the new QB time to grow in the system.
