First down! ‘Who Dat Nation” signs on I-10 clear Louisiana Senate

An effort to add “Who Dat Nation” signage along Interstate 10 at Louisiana’s borders with Texas and Mississippi was approved Wednesday (May 1) in the state Senate. The proposal from Sen. Wesley Bishop, D-New Orleans, would also place a similar tribute at the I-10 exit for the Superdome.

The version of Senate Bill 134 that now heads to the House of Representatives is far scaled down from Bishop’s original proposal. It called for the stretch of I-10 running through Louisiana to be nicknamed “Who Dat Nation Highway," with signs at the state lines as well as all 11 parishes the freeway crosses.

Bishop backed off that idea after learning the entire span of I-10, from Jacksonville, Florida, to Los Angeles, was designated a Blue Star Memorial Highway, which honors the military. His proposal still carries no cost for the state, as the money to put up the signs must come from local or private sources.

The Who Dat Nation markers will not supplant existing messages at the state: “Keep Louisiana Beautiful” and “Bienvenue en Louisiane.”

With no one speaking in opposition, the Senate voted 32-5 in favor of Bishop’s bill. Senators against the proposal: Jim Fannin, R-Jonesboro; Gerald Long, R-Winnsboro; Barrow Peacock, R-Bossier City; Neil Riser, R-Columbia; and Mike Walsworth, R-West Monroe.

The five “no” votes, displayed in red on the Senate tally board, drew a reaction from Senate President John Alario, R-Westwego.

“Who dat votin’ red?” Alario asked senators from his podium, drawing immediate laughter.

Gerald Long is an *sshole - he's was p*ssed at the kids at Louisiana School for challenging him for renaming the school after his brother who was part of the effort to bring that elite school into being...

Typical politician, if it's not named for them or their family, then they block it...

Will we ever learn? Never elect or re-elect typical politicians...
