Strategy!!

:D Do you think the Saints will use Smith as a DB in certain games and move Bulloks in his spot to better compete with some of the WR corps we will face this year?

RE: Strategy!!

Do you mean CB? I think if Bullocks shown he can come in and start (which I think someone says he does real good so far), than I think it would be pefect. And than move #2 CB to slot (Fahkir hopefully) and we have a pretty good defensive backfield.

RE: Strategy!!

We have Mike, Brown, Thomas, and Craft at CB... I think they can handle their task at hand. I rather take Bellamy out on passing downs and keep Smith and Bullocks back there at safety. This way we'll be able to cover the field better and limit the amount of big plays we give up.

RE: Strategy!!

My view on this remains this: it is hard enough to be really good at one position. Why take a guy who is turning out to be quite good at one spot and move him around? Doing such a thing just limits the number of reps (and, in turn, vaulable experience to be gained) at his primary position.

That said, I can imagine some circumstances where it would make sense to move Smith to CB (perhaps specialize packages too - like nickle), but I just don't see him starting at CB barring some wierd set of happenings.

RE: Strategy!!

Nah, I wouldn't wnat him to start there either. I mean just on plays like 3&6+..... sure fire passing plays.

RE: Strategy!!

I guess, I'd also like to see Bullocks play some down - maybe preseason downs - before I start worrying about how to get him on the field.

Zach, I agree, he may take some small number of snaps at CB in the nickle or dime (or some variation of those), but I'm pretty certain he won't in the basic package.

Danno 07-04-2005 03:33 PM

I think we'll see him lined up at CB either in nickles, or perhaps even the short yardage plays.

Maybe he's the guy who plays CB/FS in the 4-4-3 scheme. In the short stuff we can bring in an extra LB and have Smith play a combo CB/FS role, depending on what the Offense does at the snap. We have more fast LB's than we know what to do with. A 4-4-3 (3 DB's) might just work. Of course I'd just rather keep 2 CB's, Smith at FS and either Bring Bellamy up to the LB level, or insert a fastass #4 LB like Bockwoldt or Cie Grant or Fisher.

Bottom line is Dwight Smith gives us flexibility, as does Bullocks.

We can probably stack the line more without getting toasted deep.

How about a strategy to spell NICKEL correctly.

J/K. "Nickle" is a variant of the word NICKEL.

And jerkwad is often inserted when words like assshole are too frequently edited.

Heard those terms often hey? Sorry, can't help you with that. They happen to be true for ya.

An interesting suggestion BonB. I guess I'd like to see him make it through to a regular season game first.

Whodi, I'm from the Commonwealth, so you'll have to forgive my spelling... <smile>

Just a little payback from that "no one" correction you gave me a while back Kool. Someone else took it to heart.

In actuality, Cie Grant belongs at the SS position. But with Bullocks, Smith, Bellamy, and Gleason... there would be no point putting him back at that position. I don't know of many teams that would carry 5 safeties. If we move him there, we might as well cut him.

TheDeuce 07-05-2005 02:27 AM

I hope Bullocks gets a legitimate chance at the SS spot this year, he just seems to be a real exciting big-play kind of guy.

Good point JKool. If this guy could just keep healthy, then I'm sure we could discuss where he might be best suited to play.

JKool 07-06-2005 11:29 AM

Whodi... nice.

TheDuece, we are in agreement. Which position he should play only matters if he actually plays.

There was a lot of hype about this kid at MLB. Someone, perhaps Danno, knows if he's put on weight, muscle, etc. He may have transformed himself into an LB and no longer be a SS, in between being injured, of course.

4saintspirit 07-06-2005 11:43 AM

If Bullocks is that good I would not mind seeing Smith play a little corner here and there -- he played it before -- and actually wants to return to the corner -- Teaming him up with McKenzie would do a lot for our defense -- but I agree with everyone else -- unless it makes our backfield much better why chance it

Where smith as a CB comes into play the most is the corner blitz. We will be able to utilize a corner blitz much more often with Smith's ability to cover WRs, TEs, and RBs. Usually IF a QB even sees the corner blitz, he hot reads to the man left open by the blitzing corner. If you don't have an athletic safety, this short pattern can go for long gains. But we don't have that fear, hopefully, with Smith. Or Bullocks. We could not utilize this as much as I am sure the team wanted to with Bellamy in the secondary with hsi walker and Tesucky simply not being smart enough to avoid a penalty or being out of position. This is one of the most exciting changes I am hoping to see in our defense. Corner blitz baby, even in the nickel.

JKool 07-06-2005 12:46 PM

Whodi, we are having quite a day! I agree again!

The blitz is one of those places where the speed of our Safeties is critical. Also, playing left-right (instead of free-strong) will aid in that endeavor.

Smith at FS. If Bullocks is THAT good, then he plays on passing downs for Bellamy. We can do fine with Brown (does anyone know his status?) and McKenzie out there at CB.
