The 2006 A-Mac "what if............"

Okay, I know some feel we won't lose a game next year, and that's cool. This isn't really a question for you then. But for everyone else, what if the unthinkable happens and we have a terrible season? Like, #1 pick terrible? Because of Brooks' salary we know he would probably be gone, and A-Mac gets minimal time in mop up duty so gets to play some, but possibly is not ready to start. The assumption would be Haslett would be gone. SO with a new coach, and maybe new FO, do you think they should take Leinart with that number one pick? He's a stud QB, possibly a Peyton Manning type who has won it all twice in college, even without his best receiver. Even without a new coach or FO, do you take the shot on Leinart? Could be the quarterback here for the next 10 years. I don't think there is a DT in next year's draft worth number one overall, so do you pull a Deuce, draft Leinart even though you have A-Mac, and make him our guy? Just a though, not saying this would happen, but would you want Leinart?

RE: The 2006 A-Mac "what if............"

I'm going way out on a limb here - Leinart, IMO, is another one of these "great" college QBs playing on a great team. He could be the next Peyton. He could also, IMO, be the next Ryan Leaf. When all is said and done, I think he ends up being somewhere between Danny Worthless and Matt Hassleback. Whether he falls on the good side of average (Hassleback) or the bad (Worthless) is yet to be seen.

In any case, all that said, if A-Mac is given a legitimate shot, if he gets all the things that AB did (e.g. leadership class, time with former greats, coddled, etc), I think he ends up being the better NFL QB. Of course, he could be another AB, or worse, Andre Ware. He could be a great athlete that never amounts to much... but if McPherson had stayed in school, I think the choice b/w Leinart and McPherson would be fierce next season.

I'd say I have to agree with that Who, and that's a good way of looking at it. I have a hard time as seeing Leinart as a Leaf though cause he has been so consistently dominany in college, unlike Leaf who had a good season or two, but that is a valid point. But the thing is, he is groomed in a pro style offense by former NFL head coach Pete Carroll, so his learning curve may already be above A-Mac's. He lost his best receivers a year ago, and still dominated. But nice point, and well put. I want A-Mac long term, but was just throwing a scenario out there that might be interesting. Maybe a team would give us a plethora of picks like the Giants gave San D, and we could make out like bandits in the next couple of drafts.

If we are that bad I would hope that A Mac got more than mop up duty --- I would have to assume that we would play him to see what we got and if he was an NFL QB.

But its not going to happen -- while I do not see us as an 11-5 team I can honeslty say that 7-10 wins are all very realistic -- I don't see us with a 6 game season either

It doesn't matter who Leinart loses, USC has the best recruiting class every year at every position. I agree about his learning curve being much higher than A-Mac being coached by Carroll and Norm Chow. I'm USC's #1 fan (not to mention Leinart's #1), but if we had the oppurtunity to draft Leinart... I'd probably pass. Cade McNown in my opinion was very similiar to Leinart... and he didn't get anywhere. I'd probably pick one of the top DT's or CB's next year if we had a top 5 pick (highly unlikely).

By the way, McPherson played decent in college. You always hear about how the guy throws bullets in practices, but he couldn't beat out Chris Rix. I'm pretty sure his legal issues contributed to it, but in the little time he did play... he couldn't touch Leinart. He was just another raw qb with all the "potential" in the world. With that being said, I think the AFL has helped him tremendously. He put on about 20 pounds of muscle and maintained his elusiveness. Most importantly, he's matured as a person. I have high hopes for this guy and from what scouts say, he might be able to lead this franchise whenever Brooks' reign is over. But let's just take it a day at a time and see how he performs during camp and preseason.

If we get the number one pick, I say we take LT D'Brickshaw Ferguson. He would be our franchise LT. I feel he is a better prospect than Robert Gallery. He will give us the best young tackle combination in the game. He would make our O-Line in the top 3. Plus, I feel he is the best player in the draft anyway, so it will not be a reach.

While certainly an excellent player -- when do you think we can start drafting defense in the first round.

Not just that, but a LT number one overall? As I suggested earlier, since this is a fantasy anyway, maybe it would be better if we traded the number one to a team that really wants Leinart, and fleece them like San D did the Giants. And, next year is WAY deep for O-lineman, expecially tackles, so taking Ferguson first would be a mistake IMO. I would like to see us go D in the first round too though. Trade down, stud CB. If all our LBs are up to snuff. Or Stud DT. Whichever. Hell, it's just a random thought, so take whoever you want. :D

... interrrestinggg...

...first, I need to point out that Leinart won it all once... contrary to what the whiny sports writers say, there are no paper champions. LSU won that championship on the field of play, and won more games overall than USC...

.. that said :) ; I just haven't seen enough of Leinart to make an informed decision on him...

... if I am the new head coach, I need to build my defense, and picking Leinart first in the draft is not going to help me do that...

...as for the QB position, and taking into consideration the cap, I'll try to re-structure Brooks... it's not like the Saints can't win with Brooks... but I would sit down with him and tell him the truth, that he is a player whose great physical ability for the most part masks his deficiencies at playing QB, and that no one's job is safe.

..if that restructuring doesn't happen, then I would have to cut him to have money to overhaul the defense and I would go with Adrian if no other option is available, and by that I mean someone good available, not AJ Feely...

... it's kind of hard think that this team would lose more than 8-9 games, though... there are players with too much pride and talent to let that happen... LeCharles, Grant, Deuce, Horn...

You don't have to sell me on this point TR. LSU has the crystal trophy to prove it. Just playing Leinart up for trade purposes.
