Hall of Fame coach Hank Stram dead at 82

By KEVIN McGILL, Associated Press Writer
July 5, 2005
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Even in declining health, Hank Stram was able to inspire his former players.

During his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003, the former Kansas City Chiefs coach was so weak he had to be pushed onto the stage in a wheelchair. But a video montage of his career and a prerecorded speech offered powerful reminders of Stram's passion for football, moving many in the crowd to tears.

``His whole life was football -- that's what he was born for, I think. He had a passion for it, not just a liking,'' Chiefs Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson said Monday. ``He was really sincere when he talked about the team being a family. Everybody really loved him.''

RE: Former Saints Coach Hank Stram dead at 82

I think Hank Stram invented the 2 tight end formation that the Saints pretty much cannot execute and have tried so many times over the years to use in situations they have no business using it in.

He was a long time resident of Covington on the northshore I believe and he completely loved and adored New Orleans (If you've been to Kansas City you'd know why).

He was a stand up guy though. We'll miss you Hank.

Hey I know Brooks bashing is top dog right now, but did anyone notice that Hank Stram died?

... we did, but he was a Chief, not a Saint... hey, the man was a great guy, no question, but I don't think the average Saints fan ever grew endeared to him...

He was one of the Saints coaches and lived most of his life after football in New Orleans and eventually in Covington. Just because he wasn't a Saint or retired as one doesn't make me endeared to him or not. With the Saints the way they are they're aren't a lot of people to be endeared to loyaly, except the late 80 and early 90's Dome Patrol squad.

Stram was a darn good football coach. I don't know a whole lot about the man, honestly, but it's sad to see one of football's great coaches go.

He was over the hill by the time he coached New Orleans -- much like the other washed up ones we brought in Bum Phillips etc -

But there was an article in the USA today a couple of days ago that were talking about how he always was loved by his team - supposedly after they got out of football he would help them adjust/get them jobs etc. He treated all players with respect -- and when he saw players families in the stand he treated them like family -- They interviewed 4 old Chief players and they all said he was a wonderful person -- and in the Hall of Fame introduction he was quoted as saying -- freinds are like personal angels -

I heard he was a great guy -- the NFL could use more classy guys like him
