Why doesn't our QB sound like this?

Catching up with Jake

It wasn’t quite like when the New Orleans Saints held training camp in Thibodaux from 2000-02.

But the Manning Passing Academy gave local fans football in July, and reminded them that NFL training camps begin in a few weeks.

Those who braved the heat got to watch NFL MVP and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and his brother, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, toss the pigskin.

Also helping in the coaching duties was Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme.

I have met my share of professional athletes over the years, but I have to say Delhomme is one of the most humble.

Just like when he was with the Saints as a backup, he is approachable and will field an unlimited number of questions.

What I’ve always liked about Delhomme is his honesty.

When asked about the injuries that led to the Panthers’ 1-7 start last season, Delhomme said, “We got beat up, but we don’t blame the injuries. We just didn’t play well in our first eight games.

Delhomme also didn’t shy away from taking blame for the team’s poor play.

“I put a ton (of pressure) on myself and I played absolutely like a dog the first half of the season. I played terrible. When the players went down (to injuries), my first reaction was I’ve got to make plays or I’ve got to do this, Delhomme said.

With a healthy team and free agent acquisitions, the Panthers should be in the playoff hunt once again.

One key player missing from the Panthers’ offense will be receiver Muhsin Muhammad. He signed with the Chicago Bears after catching 16 touchdown passes last season.

Delhomme said the Panthers have talented receivers even without Muhammad.

“Steve Smith will be back and he was our No. 1 guy two years ago. Muhsin came in and did a great job. I would’ve been glad to have him back. But, when (wide receiver) Steve (Smith) got hurt, Kerry Colbert wasn’t even active. Then he starts playing and wound up on the all-rookie team. We will be OK, Delhomme said.

To get to the playoffs, the Panthers will have to get through the NFC South.

Atlanta went to the NFC Championship Game last season, and the Saints and Panthers had strong finishes in 2004.

Also, an improving Tampa Bay team will make getting through the division difficult.

“Every team in our division has talent. I think it is tough. You can certainly look at the NFC East, but I think ours is tough. Trust me. I feel it all week after we play (division games), Delhomme said.

It was good to speak with Delhomme again after his departure from the Saints.

He is still as humble and unassuming as ever. He is clearly one NFL player who is thankful for his opportunity and who respects the fact that an NFL career, much like a win on Sunday, is to be treasured.

“You can go from the penthouse to the outhouse real quick in the NFL. That is just the way it is. It is such a relief on Sunday after a win. But you already know in the back of your mind there is another game at the end of the week, Delhomme said.

Wow. Talk about humble. And then backs it up with great play on the field. Yeah, we made the right call.

field. Yeah, we made the right call.
We knew Jake was a class act -- we also knew that AB had so big an ego that he wasn't. Where Jake appreciates his chance AB was the first to whine for money he didn't deserve or earn. He wanted to be paid like a top 5 QB -- said he deserved it because he led them to their first playoff win ever -- didn't credit Blakes 7-3 record at all. It was all me me me -- still is for that matter --

But still -- he is our QB and Jake isn't. As much as I like Jake I have to support AB -- But if he doesn't make marked improvements in numerous areas this year I will again be calling for his head.

It really is getting old to see this over and over. Not to mention that the success that Jake has had in Carolina does not guarantee that he would have been equally successful here had he stayed. He took the 2003 Panthers to the superbowl, but after watching the 2003 Saints, I can't say he would have helped us do any better than 8-8 that year.

Getting old to who? Does it get old when people say we should have kept Roaf? I hear that every time his name is mentioned. Please.

Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: Why doesn

You mean Jake in his first year as a starter put up the same numbers as AB in his 4th? Yeah, you showed me. What were Jake's numbers from last year on half the team? Care to share? What about how he pimped NE during the Superbowl? When his defense and running game deserted him, on the biggest stage in sports? Care to share? Please.

And I dislike AB. Strongly. So what? I don't think there is anyone here who doesn't know that. Does it really matter? An NFL player won the QB challenge, it happened to be Jake. AB won a distance throw. Wow. color me impressed. Has anyone ever said he doesn't have a strong arm? I haven't heard anyone say it. But what's the point of going on with this? If you don't like Jake, DON'T READ POSTS ABOUT HIM. It's simple. There's no need to even argue over it. Create an I love Aaron Brooks no matter how crappy he plays post and live in there. I won't begrudge anyone the right to make a post about anyone they choose. I may disagree, and I probably will, but on a FORUM, you are allowed to post what you like, as long as it is what that FORUM is about. Get over it.

ACTUALLY U CAN POST AS LONG AS U DONT ATTACK ANYONE ON THIS FORUM, AND IF THIS BEHAVIOR KEEPS GOING, WE WILL BE FORCED TO TAKE ACTION

Hmm. Control, control. You must learn control.

I don't see weeks of posts dedicated to Roaf, I don't see years of posts and a entire forum dedicated to Gandy bashing. The Jake bullcrap got old years ago, like 2 years ago when he left! How often does Roaf name get mentioned here? I probably couldn't find it on the forum board anywhere right now, look for Jake's name, you can find it 10 times a day. The worshippers don't get tired of seeing it, normal people do.

Follow the yellow brick road to the Panther forum, we'll stick with AB as long as he's not 15fumbles/19TD'S/16INT'S like the 2003 Panthers QB, i'm fine.
Did Roaf win the QB challenge? Is Roaf being interviewed in the news? I did say, and reading comprehension can help here, WHEN ROAF'S NAME IS MENTIONED......The same thing can be said when La'Roi Glover is mentioned, and Sammy Knight, and Willie Jackson. WHEN THEY ARE MENTIONED, there is always a we should never have let them go post. But they would have to be in the news to have a thread about them wouldn't they?

I think AB probably is a pretty good dude when you get down to it.
Quotable in a positive sense? No. He talks more like an NBA guy or a boxer....confident even after his worst performances.
Jake is more of a blue collar guy who says things that fans can identify with. And the accountability is refreshing.

Here's one thing to think about.....The year Jake and AB had similar stats, one went to the super bowl and the other stayed home for the playoffs. Defense anyone?

If I'm picking QBs...I'm taking Jake over AB. But the Panthers' D has been alot better than ours over the last few years, which helps Jake recover from mistakes. AB's mistakes tend to be amplified by the D's inability to pick him up. Having said that....it's interesting to note that AB was not very good at all over our 4 game winning streak. But, nobody complained that much because the Saints were winning. If AB could bottle his best moments and put together a season of them, he would be the man. If he did the same with his worst moments...he would struggle to make an AFL team. It's the inconsistency that is so maddening. I'm ready to write him off after last year...but I really do believe he's done if he doesn't bring it this year. I think the presence of Adrian may bring out the best in him. If not....I'm ready to get beyond the AB era.

Bottom line...Jake is a rootable guy and AB is less so. But, people tend to be vehemently on one side or the other. Me? I've recovered from the Saint's organizational foibles and I accept them for the flawed stepchildren that they are. There will always be things beyond your control with any team you root for.....we have to get over the Jake move. It was a bad move....we trashed the '02 season by having a bad/injured QB on the field. And.....we are still the most frustrating team in the NFL. Soooo, enjoy

But beware of the dark side. Anger...fear...aggression. The dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight.

There are no words. For pakowitz sake, and since you get to call me a jackarse and I have to just take it and not respond cause what I say is a personal attack while that is fair, and so everyone knows what I am talking about:

Did this same jackarse that posted the nonsense about Jake humbleness post the artcile about AB and his achievements off the field this year?
i'll be respectful to you and knock this foolishness at the same time.

Boy are you forgetful, kind'a selective forgetfulness. Jake in his first season? How long has Jake been in the NFL? How many starts did he have with the Saints? How long was he in NFL Europe playing? THAT'S THE FIRST PART OF YOUR SELECTIVE MEMORY. Jake got all the practice time in the world, in NewOrleans with what 2-3 different Coaching staff's. See it seems Haslett wasn't the only one that didn't have Jake starting. The guy in NFL Europe had him backing-up Pat Barnes, Ditka had'm backing-up Billy Joe 1-2.
Um, I said Jake's full season as a starter. You do know the difference between being a starter and just being in the league right?

And after his first year of fulltime starting, I think he put up numbers his second year similar to AB'S numbers his second year of fulltime starting, it also seems we had the same record at the end 7-9 as the Panthers last year. Sooooo yet again, you are right in the end.You have been shown-up again!! And by the way, I don't remember ever hearing Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Donovan Mcnabb's people hyping, "having been there", nothing from what i'm told matters unless you win it! Nobody remembers who lost the Superbowl, well except the Jake worshippers. Being lucky, in the right situation at the right time, means what?????!
You're kidding right? I guess you think AB could lead us to a 7-9 record with Deuce out, Stecker out, Joe Horn out, LeCharles out, Charles Grant out, Mike McKenzie out, etc. etc. etc., yet he can't lead us to better than 8-8 with all of them playing. And did you say getting to the Superbowl doesn't matter? Really? Ask Dan Marino if he would have liked more than one shot at a Superbowl. Playing in a Superbowl doesn't matter???? Ask the Eagles if after 3 years playing in an NFC champ game, if they weren't happy to get over the hump. They may not have been happy they lost, but I bet the sigh of relied could be heard all the way to the Liberty Bell that they finally got there. Seriously. I better just move on.

Getting there on your own merit, lets see Jake do that. If he's what you say he is, then he can do it this year, no excuses, no more injuries. I'm very thankful to God for giving us the Panthers the first game, so I can put your face square in AB'S arse and tell you to kiss it.
wow, that last line was real respectful. I am glad Pak edits us both. I don't know how Jake will prevent his team from having 14 starters out due to injury, but I am sure if he could, he would. Yikes.
