Conwell the starter?

I thought this might be a little premature:

Saints | Conwell the Starter, but

Mike Detillier, of the Courier, reports New Orleans Saints TE Ernie Conwell will start at tight end in 2005, but beyond being a blocker and a red zone receiver, nothing is clear about his role.

Anybody know whats up with Meier....i thought he would beat out Ernie?

He can and could be very good... if he avoids injuries.

He could be, but his hands have been too unreliable lately!

Euphoria 07-28-2005 10:45 AM

Because someone is listed on the offseason depth-chart as the starter, it really is meaningless...Conwell in my opinion will probably be hurt by the time season starts.
Bet you $100 that Conwell is the starting tightend this year.

Conwell couldn't block Peppers two years ago, what has he done to prove he can now?
Nada.
Which is also what we have at the TE position.
Shad Meier will start by week 3
He's probably going to start sooner b/c McCarthy isn't around to tell Has a guy hasn't picked up the offense yet.

Ok, and? Not too many offensive linemen that can handle Peppers straight up, much less a tight end.

I dunno BnB - I liked Conwell a lot when we signed him over from the Rams, but he's been a pretty big disappointment since he got here. That may have to do with offensive style, I guess. Regardless of what Holt, Hakim, and Martz will tell you, the Rams were a finesse team. Conwell was great in the passing game, but I honestly can't speak to how well he blocked in St. Louis. B/c he had Holt, Bruce, Hakim, and Proehl running around in the secondary, as well as Marshall Faulk coming out of the backfield, Conwell probably ran free a lot. I know he did against the Saints. I think he's caught inside a lot more in NO and the defensive secondary isn't as wide open as it was when he was playing for the greatest show on turf. He doesn't seem to be real physical and has problems in traffic. I dunno if he'll ever be the guy in NO that he was in St. Louis.

I never said he was ideal, nor do I think we have an adequate solution for the position, all I said was that he would be the starter. ;)

You may be right, but I think competition will be pretty fierce. Boo and Meier will both give him a run for his money. Hilton seems like he should be great... we'll have to see if the kid comes around.

I read that he isn't physical enough, doesn't play as big as his size.

I can't say this from watching him, because I haven't - this is only from an article I read somewhere.

BlackandBlue 09-12-2005 02:15 PM

Cough cough cough

LordOfEntropy 09-12-2005 04:04 PM

Make sure you turn your head when you do that coughing.

BlackandBlue 09-12-2005 04:17 PM

You'd like that, wouldn't you :o

Dude, I'm so bummed we're not going to have a chance to toast a beer at a Saints game, bro.

pakowitz 09-12-2005 06:34 PM

i have to say conwell played very good yesterday despite getting hurt. before the injury he was catching everything in sight
