I realy like the idea of keeping Amac on his toes. No free ride here. I believe the front office did realy well with this transaction. You want the money? Behave yourself and prove to our org. that you deserve more money.

McPherson and the Saints agreed to a three-year, $1.05 million deal with a $125,775 signing bonus, according to McPherson's agent, Leigh Steinberg. The deal is comparable to those signed by other fifth-round picks, but Steinberg believes McPherson, a quarterback who played for Indiana in the Arena Football League last season, will prove he's not the typical fifth-round pick. As a result, Steinberg wanted to keep the deal at no more than three years.
"We felt he was the best quarterback in the draft when we agreed to represent him," Steinberg said. "But because of circumstances, he was drafted in the fifth round, which is good fortune for the Saints."

Duh!
If they really believe he was the most talented QB then it makes sense to keep the deal short.
It also makes sense for the Saints.
If he performs then pay him.
If he is the bad character guy that some are making him out to be then cut him.

The end of this season should provide us fans with an answer.

I was gonna respond 08, but I agreed with RMS' assessment. It was a good idea to keep it short. You don't usually backload rookie contracts. That is reserved for vets who maynever see the end of that deal. And backloaded contracts ususlly come with generous bonuses. But I haven't heard of too many, if any, backloaded contracts for rookies cause theyare just too unpredictable. So the short term deal was the best option.

They can't. CBA boys.

1st round picks sign 5 year deals. 2nd round picks sign 4 year deals. All others sign 3 year rookie contracts. :) Of course, a player can always whine and cry and holdout to get top 5 money any time he chooses. LOL

The Saints would be real dumb to sign AMac to a deal longer than 3 years. Despite what some people on this site may say about him, he is still a very talented and very inexperienced and troubled young QB who was a gamble even in the 5th round.

I'm not aware of a provision in the CBA making contract lengths mandatory. Rather, I thought they were a kind of status quo, not a requirment.

In that light, I see the point of trying to lock the kid in longterm. There's no risk because he can still be cut at any time, regardless of contract. But assuming he did blossom into a star, then at least his rights would be tied to this franchise. There'd be no worries of him hitting the free agent market.

Of course, that is exactly what his agent does -NOT- want, so he'd never sign a longterm contract anyway.

But I can see the point of wanting to tie him to this organization longterm, just in case he did realize that (tremendous) potential.
