J. P. Losman

Losman is now in the driver's seat for Bills

NFL.com

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (Aug. 3, 2005) -- The kid has the keys. That's always a scary thought, even if the reference is only metaphoric. In this case, the young, first-time "driver" is J.P. Losman and the "car" is the Buffalo Bills ' offfense.

Losman's youth and inexperience is evident the moment he sets foot on the practice field at the Bills' training camp at St. John Fisher College. You see a bit of uncertainty and hesitation as he drops back in the pocket. You see a quarterback whose speed and athleticism defined his collegiate career at Tulane and who still seems a little more comfortable with running than throwing. You don't see a commanding presence or take-charge personality that is normally associated with his position.

Not yet, at least.

I know this isn't a Saints topic. But this probably as good a place as any to find out what you folks from the New Orleans area know about him. What do you think? And for you fantasy geeks - Does he have enough upside for consideration in late rounds of a draft?

Thanks in advance.

I think he'll be great for a late round pick. I've done my scouting for this year FF, and I have him on my list of quarterback options. Would be a nice bye week quarterback fill in.

I hope J.P does well, but there is no way I would draft him in a fantasy league if I had a choice. Maybe as a back-up. J.P. was kinda raw coming out of Tulane, but he is very athletic. His learning curve was cut short due to breaking his leg last year and not getting any reps for the majority of the season. I think down the line, buffalo made a good choice, but fantasy wise, if he is other than your backup you may be in trouble. The good thing is, with him at QB, teams will key on McGahee, and with Moulds and Evans on the outside, he may have a few good games stat wise.

Man, reading that article I couldn't help but think about our team.Just change a few words and much of it fits:

"The quarterback has to go out there and try not to make as many mistakes as he can, and let the leadership role just progress as the season goes and let the accomplishments progress as the season goes."

The operative word is "progress." The [Saints'] fortunes for 2005 are tied directly to how fast -- or slow -- [Brooks] develops into a mostly reliable starting quarterback. I'm not talking about the point at which he becomes the top-flight performer that the [Saints] declared he would become when they [gave him the nod over Jeff Blake]. I'm just talking about basic reliability and efficiency.

It's conceivable that [Brooks] won't get there this season. It's conceivable the [Saints], who were on the verge of being a playoff team last season, could take some steps backward as [Brooks] works at ridding himself of the rough edges.

Sound like us pretty much for the last 4 years?

I'm sure a few BLs will crap on me for this, but whatever...

I agree. Even as a backup, I think he is a little risky compared to opther options. Honestly, unless you are drafting P Manning, Culpepper, or McNabb, there isnt a QB you can pick up in the 3rd round that is noticebly better than one you can grab in the 8th.

Add on the fact that most Fantasy coaches avoid AB because he sucks in real football. AB is a nice backup to get, because he puts up great fantasy numbers. Luckily in Fantasy Football, his last minute fumble that ends all hope of winning the game doesnt have much effect on his fantasy numbers.

Then, there are the questionables, like Joey Harrington (Poised to breakout or bust, but the breakout will be big if it happens) or Kurt Warner (Giants didnt have the greatest recievers in the game, and lets face it, the Giants we winning until they pulled Warner. His experience was winning them games, even if he was struggling physically. He has had time to recover from any injuries he had, so he could be a nice option with all the recieving talent they have in Arizona. Carson Palmer is another good option. He is really coming into his own. Carr and Leftwich are great backups with a few years experience.

The only way I would take Losman is MABYE in a keeper league. I have a much healthier respect for his future than his present.
