Where is TalmanGardnerCousin?

TGC where are you?

Your predictions seem to be coming true.
I have seen your Cuz at camp a lot and the dude looks like he has Crazy Glue on his gloves!

He made a cut on Jimmy Williams today on a post pattern that left Williams down on his butt in the middle of the field.

I hope he wins the #3 receiver spot.
It looks like the "light bulb" went on for him.

HOME SWEET HOME
Two players who have impressed early in camp are wide receiver Talman Gardner and cornerback Jimmy Williams. Both are Louisiana natives and have exceeded expectations this offseason. Gardner, who has been referred to by Haslett as the “best receiver on the field early in camp, appears to have grasped the speed of the NFL and learned to catch the ball with more consistency.

While discussing Gardner with a friend of mine, who is a scout in the college ranks, the name of a perennial pro bowl receiver came up in the conversation. “Terrell Owens was a third round pick coming out of college because he couldn’t catch a cold, said my friend. “He was always known for being physical and hard-working, but ran a pedestrian 40 time and let passes into his body too much.

Talman Gardner = Terrell Owens? Hmmm… sounds a little premature at this point, but I can definitely see the similarities. Gardner is a physical receiver who possesses great acceleration and quickness. And while he does not have world class speed, he does have the ability to get on top of defenders and can be classified as a deep threat. He is explosive, physical, and can separate after the intermediate catch. No one is asking Gardner to be T.O., but if he can catch the ball consistently once the bullets are flying, he will give the Saints an inside, physical threat who can punish nickel defenders at the line and beat safeties to the end zone.

Jimmy Williams, on the other hand, is reminiscent of a player currently on the Saints roster: Fakhir Brown. Brown came to the Saints as a special teams standout who eventually flourished into a starter under the tutelage of New Orleans’ defensive staff. Williams has taken a similar path to the Saints. A student under Willy Robinson in San Francisco, the 28 year old Vanderbilt alum was a standout punt returner and special teamer with the 49ers. Williams gained starting experience in 2004 because of injuries to the secondary and is currently 5th on the Saints depth chart at CB, but will likely go the direction of Brown, being activated on Sundays thanks to his special teams prowess. And while he is not as physical as the Saints’ starter at left CB, Williams has the size, speed, and quickness to emerge as a contributor down the stretch and in seasons to come.
How about some love for some Louisiana home grown?

Finally! A big, physical WR with skillz!

He looked good in the BnG scrimmage tonight.
At least until the sattelite feed went down (damn Cox!).

Not everyone was laughing at you TGC. But I do remember him getting hammered by a few. But this was his year to put up or shut up. Now his critics are the ones shuttin up.

He's stepping up big time and I hope you laugh your ass off at the non-believers all year long, and them some. Its still early so he needs to keep it up all thru camp to make it impossible not to give him the slot.

He's proably done enough already to claim a roster spot. Now he needs to put the pressure on the staff for that starting slot.

I don't know about the starting spot, but I would love for him to become our 3rd... he definately has more ability than both Hakim and Henderson.

FireVenturi 08-07-2005 12:21 PM

if he wins #3 spot.....put him and joe on the outside and move donte to the slot in 3wr situations. that could be nasty.

Oops my bad, I meant starter, as the starting #3 WR in 3 WR sets. I don't think he's progressed far enough to take Horns spot or Donte's spot...Yet!

I meant 1st string, but in the 3 WR set.

See, I don't get this Danno. You're saying the light finally clicked and Talman is finally putting it all together to be the WR he's always been talented enough to be? Hhhmmm - why should the critics shut up? Your statement assumes that he wasn't playing up to potential in the past, does it not? Making his critics right...

I don't recall anyone saying that he didn't have talent or couldn't do it - only that his head wasn't in the right place and it was confusing as to why he wasn't playing better. But you're right about one thing - he has actually done enough to shut the critics up. He did what he needed to - he proved it on the field. Props to Talman for that. Now if we could only get AB to follow suit...

WhoDat, I'm not really following you. I didn't say the light finally clicked. I didn't say he should have been awesome his 1st or 2nd year. Where did you get that from? I've stated that some WR's (especially middle-round) need a couple years to develop. Well its his 3rd year. He had the potential to become a good WR from day one but it was going to take some time.
I've read people say he sucks and always will, can't catch and never will. Those are the critics I'm referring to. My statement mentions nothing about him not stepping up in the past or underachieving.
He needed to take the next natural step in his development, which he has, or appears to have. There are some who will assert that if a player doesn't play well his 1st year, he never will. Thats idiotic.

WhoDat 08-08-2005 10:23 AM

OK - well I agree that is a pretty dumb statement ("if a player doesn't play well his 1st year, he never will"), I just don't think that I've heard it all that much.
