CAMP CONFIDENTIAL

Friday, August 05, 2005 - Times Picayune

Temperature: 83
Heat index: 91

Attendance: 839

In the spotlight: Weakside linebacker

Depth chart

No. player | Ht. | Wt. | Exp.

57 Colby Bockwoldt | 6-1 | 237 | 1

58 Cie Grant | 6-0 | 235 | 2

51 Levar Fisher | 6-2 | 240 | 3

Bockwoldt was a star in the offseason program and has established himself as the clear starter. Grant is the wild card. He has dropped about 25 pounds since making the switch from middle linebacker and is having his first injury-free camp. He's gaining more confidence mentally and physically each day. Fisher, a former Arizona Cardinal, is trying to earn a roster spot as a reserve and special-teams player.

GET TO KNOW:

NATE FIKSE

Position: PK

Height/weight: 5-9, 195

Experience: 1

Age: 23

College: UCLA

Hometown: Anaheim, Calif.

Did you know: Originally signed by San Francisco in 2003, he spent last season as a punter in NFL Europe for the Amsterdam Admirals. . . . Was a two-time All-Pac-10 kicker. . . . In 2004, he was a goalie coach for his former high school's soccer team (Esperanza), which won the state championship in California. . . . Is an avid golfer and reader, especially Dan Brown books.

HE SAID IT:

"It has been a lot of fun. With John (Carney) and I, we're just doing the best we can, helping each other out for the better cause of the team. This is a way for me to get exposure, and help these guys get stronger for this team."

WHO'S HOT:

Dwight Smith. The veteran defensive back was a ball-hawk all afternoon, grabbing an interception and making good decisions in the first-string secondary.

WHO'S NOT:

Todd Bouman. The backup quarterback was inconsistent Thursday, including one ball he bounced into the ground, well in front of a receiver. He also threw an interception to Mike McKenzie while being blitzed.

PLAY OF THE DAY:

Defensive end Charles Grant slipped through the offensive line and swatted a Bouman pass to the ground, just a few feet from the quarterback.

INJURY REPORT

Pos. | Player | Injury

OL | Spencer Folau | sore shoulder (out)

DT | Howard Green | sore shoulder (out)

TE | Shad Meier | torn knee meniscus (out)

LB | Courtney Watson | left quad (out)

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I was the greatest at McDonogh 35. Still will be. Right now, I'm just trying to get my swagger back." -- Talman Gardner, when jokingly asked by fellow receiver Donté Stallworth to compare his high school days to now.

TODAY'S SCHEDULE: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. (indoors) and 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (indoors).
