RE: Who remembers

I agree. I think we need to give fat a$$ till the end of preseason before cutting him. I'm not against getting rid of him, I just want to make sure he dosen't turn out to be a stud (laughing while typing this) somewhere else. Really, Sully has a lot of time and money vested in him to toss him before final cuts.

On another note, I don't believe we can say that Sully and Fields are in the same catagory. Sully is a lazy hot dog eater. Fields wanted to play and was willing to work to do it. Different story with Sully.

RE: Who remembers

Not sure I understand that argument. Like, for some guys, it takes 7 years before they become good players/solid NFL starters, so maybe you should just pay them to do nothing for the better part of a decade and then maybe then you can be positive if the light will come on or if you just wasted millions and lost out on other guys who could have taken that roster spot. Not a very convincing argument to me.

Don't worry WhoDat, I NEVER understand his arguments.

TheGambler 08-08-2005 09:45 AM

Well how's THIS for an argument...

What would be the point of cutting him RIGHT NOW, before the first preseason game? If they wanted to do that........then they should have just cut him in March or April.

He can be cut on September 1 just as easily as he could have been cut on August 1. Everyone just needs to calm the **** down and let the guy play.

WhoDat 08-08-2005 10:35 AM

That is a fine argument. Not sure that there was anything said in this thread that would suggest otherwise Gambler, but OK.

There is a huge difference between Mark Fields and Johnathan Sullivan.

Fields' issues at the beginning of his career were never about lack of commitment... the guy gave 100% every game...
... he never was overweight, on the contary, he was always in top physical condition and the best athlete on the roster...

...Fields had the misfortune of coming into the league the last year of Mora's tenure and the beginning of Ditka's tenure: not one single player was developed during those years in New Orleans; and obviously he was not given a chance in St Louis...

...Obviously John Fox recognoized the ability and character of Fields and took the time to teach Mark Fields to be an NFL LB...

Someone has a short fuse. I thought this was a pretty calm conversation.

By the way, I'm all for having Sullivan on this team for this year. I'm a pretty patience guy when it comes to young guys, but I'm definately not for waiting 5 or 6 seasons.

Mark Fields was horrible his first 2 seasons with us and we kept him. He had a solid 3rd and 4th season with the Saints and then regressed. He deserved to be cut with the money he was making and the production he was giving us as well as the Rams. He had one solid season with the Panthers, but if you really look at it, his numbers don't exactly jump out at you. So basically out of the 9 full seasons he's played, he's only been a "solid" player for 3 of them. The money and production definately does not add up... we did the right thing.

I agree Tobias. John Fox is a defensive genius and their team had a solid cast of players. It definately helped him to be in that system. If he were a Saint, I doubt he would have repeated those 2002 numbers with us.

Look....what reason does he have for turning on the light switch now??? He must have his millions well invested, because getting a new contract obviously isn't his top priority. My guess is that he will continue to be the same nasty lazy sloth of a man that he has been since he got to NO. This is a situation that is pretty common in the NFL....some players don't start to turn it up until their second or third team...others never turn it up. I'm am actually quite sure that he has the talent to play in the NFL. However, for whatever reason, NO is not doing it and will never do it for him. Maybe he needs to go see Nick Saban and cry a little of that fat out of himself.

And if he goes on to do great things in the NFL, we can't kick ourselves in the butt....we gave him 3 years.....in a league where the average career length is 4 years....how much time should u get????

No, actually he's had 2 years and 1 week of training camp. That's my point, you guys are wayyy ahead of yourselves. It seems like 3 years to ya'll.

oh i'm sorry....two years and one week of training camp, and he's a DT that probably wouldn't even be on the roster if he weren't a first round pick that we invested 2 picks on. Doesn't anyone else think it's a bit naive to think that he's gonna make some miraculous surge and start or even be a primary backup for us this season???

If we were to get rid of him this season...i would say try to trade him and get something for him.....a 5th rounder would be a STEAL at this point, but i would even take a 6th or 7th for him. That won't happen because every other team knows that he sucks(and knew that on draft day 2003 too). Other than that....put him on the IR list and get someone in here that wants to play.

It just seems like so many others on the team have come to camp with a good attitude and i actually feel better about the team than i have in a while....having sully around is simply counterproductive....and he would do more harm than good.

I'm just a big ole teddy bear.

WhoDat, shut the **** up!

Oh, and picking up Kevin Williams doesn't seem like much of a disaster to me. Don't you mean it looked like a disaster then, but perfect now?

To be ticked-off, that's fine but you just ranting now. Spouting off ridiculous stuff, calm down guy...Sully at the time of his drafting had shot up the draft boards and not just the Saints. If you remember correctly the Saints leap-frogged Minnesota whom I know was about to take Sully, once the Saints did that Minnesota loss their minds and let the time expire for the 2nd straight year. And they just backhandedly picked Kevin Williams as a afterthought. It looks like a disaster now, but it looked perfect at the time.

Nobody who knew Sully then can believe he's even the same person. So applaude the team for the attempt, you just can't judge heart or a person mental state. All 32 teams have done it before.

Who's ticked off.....never said i was and i'm not. But i was ticked off when he was drafted since i thought we were about to pick Terrell Suggs. The better Suggs does and the worse Sully does just reinforces my feelings. I really didn't even know who he was.

What part of my statement was ridiculous? Does he not suck??? The draft day bit was just a low blow, but i doubt any team would take him in a trade. I think most everything i said has merit.

Anyway that's all the time i have for this....i just got madden and i'm wasting playing time right now.

I think he pulled that out of his burro , from the sight of his photo ....

I read an article that talks about Sully beating Mayberry bad in practice and burying the RB in the backfield one play and then getting broken down like a girlscout by Bentley on the very next play. He is quite the enigma. A larda** with some talent that manifests itself every 5th play or so. I give him one more year just for the salary cap ramifications, but after that I would, how should I say this, divest myself of his presence.

That was Bouman's big mouth .
It caught Minnesota totally off guard and sent the war room into a panic in Minnesota .....
