CAMP CONFIDENTIAL

Thursday, August 11, 2005

Morning

Temperature: Indoors
Heat index: Indoors

Attendance: 150

Evening

Temperature: 85 degrees
Heat index: 89 degrees

Attendance: 3,378

In the spotlight: Split end

Depth chart

No. player | Ht. | Wt. | Exp. |

83 Donté Stallworth | 6-0 | 196 | 4

19 Devery Henderson | 5-11 | 222 | 2

84 Michael Lewis | 5-8 | 173 | 5

18 Thyron Anderson | 6-4 | 202 | R

11 Chris Vance | 6-2 | 190 | 1

13 Tramissian Davis | 6-0 | 195 | R

The Saints have been patient with Donté Stallworth, and he's gradually matured into a quality starter. New offensive coordinator Mike Sheppard plans to get him the ball early and often this season. Devery Henderson has had a quiet camp. He shows flashes of ability but hasn't been as consistent as coaches would like. Michael Lewis is a reliable reserve who makes plays when called upon.

GET TO KNOW:

THYRON ANDERSON

Position: WR

Height/weight: 6-4, 202

Experience: Rookie

Age: 25

College: Grambling State

Hometown: Jonesboro

Did you know: Played at Grambling State under Coach Doug Williams. . . . Former Grambling State and Minnesota Vikings standout Sammy White was his receivers coach. . . . Starred for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League in 2003-04, catching 76 passes for 1,147 yards and three touchdowns in 18 games. . . . He's a first cousin of former Grambling State and NFL players Stevie Anderson and Scotty Anderson, also of Jonesboro. . . . His father and brother plan to drive from Jonesboro to attend Friday's exhibition game against the Seahawks.

He said it: "This is a great experience. I try to pick up something from every receiver out here. You can always learn. I feel like I belong out here, but there's a lot of good competition. It's a dream just being here."

WHO'S HOT: Defensive end Darren Howard is enjoying a healthy camp for the first time in years and it shows. He's playing with burst and athleticism and looks primed for a strong season.

WHO'S NOT: Linebacker Roger Knight was on the bubble before camp started. Now he has a knee injury. That's a bad combination for a player in a crowded competition for roster spots.

PLAY OF THE DAY: Anytime tight end Lamont Hall scores a touchdown it's a highlight, regardless if the play was routine in nature. Hall took a crossing pass from rookie quarterback Adrian McPherson and showed surprising speed to beat Brent Hafford and Fred Booker to the front corner of the end zone. Hall's rare score elicited this comment from cornerback Mike McKenzie: "I can't believe what I just saw!"

INJURY REPORT

Pos. | Player | Injury

TE | Ernie Conwell | groin (out)

WR | Az-Zahir Hakim | right hamstring (out)

TE | Shad Meier | torn knee meniscus (out)

OL | Spencer Folau | shoulder (out)

LB | Roger Knight | sore right knee (out)

LB | James Allen | knee (out)

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I think that (injuries) is probably the coach's biggest concern. There is a fine line between being ready to play the opener but not giving up too much work. I don't really know what the answer is. With Jon (Stinchcomb), nobody touched him. He just planted on his foot, and it was an unfortunate accident. You hate to see injuries happen in practice. If they happen in a game or competition, then that's something that everybody knows happens in the business, but not when you are in a practice." -- Saints coach Jim Haslett.

TODAY'S SCHEDULE: Morning, weight lifting, 9 a.m.; evening, 3 p.m. practice (open to public).
