New Guy's observation on the game.

Hi, guys. New to the site!

Just wanted to give my take on the game. BTW - I was actually at the dome sitting about 5 rows up in the plaza level.

I tend not to overreact to one preseason game. Our starters played only one quarter. The starting defense did okay. It was our offense (Deuce Fumble) that set up the Seahawks TD.

Our starting defense forced 4 punts on 5 possessions. It was the 2nd and 3rd stringers that skewed things and made us look bad.

To my surprise, there was no pass rush from our DEs. Then again, they were playing a basic defense and the QB (Hasselbeck) was getting rid of the ball rather quickly.

On offense Brooks looked fine. Joe dropped a perfectly throw pass and a perfectly thrown 20-yd. strike to Donte Stallworth was called back because of a penalty on Jammal Brown.

BTW -- There were a couple of times when our offensive line allowed someone to come free into our backfield. Brooks did not run into the blitz or anything of that nature. The defender was in Brooks face before he had time to react. I think Brooks did a good job of avoiding the sack.

RE: New Guy

I watched the re-broadcast last night, and surprised though I am, I've got to admit that I agree with NOLA on all points.

In fact, I'll take it one further.

The first stringers not only held their own - they looked damn good. DAMN GOOD. I'm surprised. No, I'm SHOCKED. Brooks was on target with accurate lasers - extremely sharp. He looked like a pro. But the defense was the biggest shocker. It was a stone wall. They held Seattle's high power offense (some say the best O-LINE in the league) to only one touchdown, and that was on a short field after the fumble. I was very impressed.

Really, after finally having seen it - I'm shocked.

TheGambler 08-14-2005 10:07 AM

You're never going to last with that attitude...

EVERYTHING IS BROOKS, DAMMIT!!

Don't you know that Brooks throwing a ball 8 YARDS SHORT OF THE FIRST DOWN MARKER (as one lamer said) ON 3RD DOWN .....IN A PRESEASON GAME..............is a sign of things to come? Do'nt you know he should have kept the play alive until something developed???? Better yet.....he could have tried to force something downfield...maybe that would have resulted in an Interception! God forbid that son of a b---- take the safe route on 3rd down, with our first team defense holding Seattle in check.....HE SHOULD HAVE THROWN IT TOWARDS A RECIEVER DAMMIT. That way we could have had the added benefit of POSSIBLY MAKING A BIG PLAY IN A PRESEASON GAME, while exposing one of our starting WR's to a huge hit. Injuries, sminjuries.....it was all Brooks's fault

Do'nt you know that Brooks, as another lamer said, COMPLETELY OVERTHREW JOE HORN on that one pass (not the inside slant)............JOE HAD TO ELEVATE ABOUT 4 INCHES OFF THE GROUND AND THE BALL HIT HIM IN THE HAND DAMMIT!! 4 INCHES!!! THAT'S AN OLYMPIC LEAP FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!! Fire Brooks right now.....

Get this......some are even saying, after Preseason game #1, that THE ONLY WAY THINGS ARE GONNA CHANGE IS IF WE FIRE HASLETT......And I'm having to read all these lame ass heartbreaking posts such as "i get my hopes up every year...and nothing ever changes.....I honestly thought the pieces were in place".....(as if we're already 8-8 and have just got knocked out of the wildcard hunt). Oh I'm sorry, is it January 1 already? Coulda fooled me..

[/sarcasm]

In all seriousness, you sir, are a breath of fresh air. Some of these people are so blind to reality............if the Saints had come out and beaten Seattle in this game, and Brooks had thrown 2 TD passes............we'd have heard "the saints did good, BUTTTT let's see how they do when it counts". Sorta like..damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Most of these posters are the human equivalent to Eeyore. You'll figure this out in due time.

papz 08-14-2005 10:27 AM

7-9, 9-7, 8-8, and 8-8... that's reality. Can you blame people for venting after 4 seasons of mediocre football?

Credit is given where it's due.

LordOfEntropy 08-14-2005 10:39 AM

Can I blame? Hell no, of course not. In fact, I'm normally one of those guys doing the bashing. If I hadn't watched the re-broadcast last night, I would be doing more bashing right now.

But credit where credit is due. The first string looked excellent last night, and though I'm surprised, for the first time in a long while I'm not utterly disgusted.

CHACHING 08-14-2005 10:44 AM

See Papz...most people on this board HOPE that something goes wrong..(mainly when it comes to Brooks and Haz)
It's kinda like an evil stepmother that follows the child around the house waiting for him to do wrong...

I was disgusted with the score so I decided not to watch the re-broadcast. But it's very encouraging to hear this about our first string defense... 4 punts out of 5 possessions is outstanding. Hopefully we'll continue this trend throughout preseason and take that momentum into the regular season. We'll need it versus Carolina and notching a few wins in preseason will help with our confidence.

chRxis 08-14-2005 11:04 AM

the first team, with the exception of an early fumble, look good, but i'm really concerned about the depth of this team... the talent to rush and stop the run is severely lacking on the defensive side of the ball with reserves in, which we will have to play on some downs b/c starter need breaks or they get injured (knock on wood)... overall, the story this season will be whether or not we can stop the rush on defense, same story as last couple of seasons..... we didn't upgrade at the dt position, so i don't know... offensively, they looked good and the line held their own, with the biggest number being zero.... zero sacks, zero interceptions with the first team in...

CHACHING 08-14-2005 12:35 PM

True dat!.......They played pretty damn good for the first game of the season.......
after all this ain't the Colts!!!!

Don't feel bad....alot of people ran their mouths without actually having seen the game.

jnormand 08-14-2005 01:20 PM

It's preseason anyway. The friggin' game dosen't mean anything. It's a quick game to evaluate talent and see who can and can't contribute. I'm glad to hear about the D. I hope the backups can improve.

TallySaint 08-14-2005 02:12 PM

Our pass rush was great a few plays. Then again, on a few plays we looked content to just contain the qb between the hashes. I dunno.

Other than a coupla plays, I thought Bouman had an ok game. He did a decent job picking up the blitz, in my opinion.

First team offense, 3 points. First team offense, 3 points. First team offense, 3 points. Against a vanilla defense. Of barely a playoff team. 3 points. It's good to know so many have no problem with this. Notice, I said first team OFFENSE. 3 points. On a 50 yard field goal. At least Carney is in mid-season form. Let me make the excuse for next game, WE PLAYED THE DEFENDING SUPERBOWL CHAMPS. Now we got that one out the way.

Nice analogy.

I said something similar a few days ago.

I truly believe these people WANT the Saints to win.....but when they don't, they are (after the frustration of the loss has passed) instilled with a bit of silent "i told ya so" confidence that they can display about Brooks and Haslett.....even if only PART of the blame can be put on them..

It reminds me of something that happened a few years ago at work. This old man (not my boss, but naturally as someone who's much older and more experienced, you tend to think of them in a similar manner) that I work with was pissed off about something I did ( I won't go into detail, but even though it was a rookie mistake on my part and I had only been there 3 months, I will say that his agitation was justified. Especially since it directly involved one of his clients).........and after that incident, he pretty much ignored my very existence 90% of the time. He only spoke to me when he absolutely had to......and often times would go an entire day with saying only about 2 words to me. To put it mildly, he was holding a grudge. So this went on for a few months...

One day, though, I come into work at 10 AM (supposed to be there at 8 ). In another stupid move of mine...I decide to "fudge" a bit.......putting down that I got there at 9 AM.......and in return, i'd stay till 6 instead of 5. Well the next day, he goes off on the matter when it's just him and me around...........telling me how that kinda bull**** could get me in trouble and stuff....and how i was "on my own" from now on. Needless to say, I learned a lot about life on my first few months on that job...

To this day, I still work with that old man....and actually everything is cool between us (at least it is). But the whole point of that story was the fact that he all of a sudden knew I existed when he saw something he wanted to ***** about.......but when I wasn't doing anything shady.....I might as well have been a ghost..

We were also running a vanilla offense. No motion by the WRs. Very basic plays. No doubt, there is much room for improvement.

But we're talking about 1 quarter of football. In a preseason game no less. I think I've watched enough football over the years to understand you can't draw too many conclusions.

The offensive line has a lot of new blood. They need to use this preseason to get on the same page. This was to be expected. From my vantage point, they got a much bigger push than the previous year. Very good sign that Deuce will have a monster year.

Let's not jump the gun.

ssmitty 08-14-2005 04:32 PM

a lot of us can only base our take on the game,(without seeing it) on what we read from you guys or hear on the news........
and if you were in our shoes, you just may do the same.........
anyway, thanks for the observation...............it's good the 1st stringers are holding their own and probably will be out for blood come carolina time, but i am still disappointed in the 2nd and 3rd stringers. defense to be precise.......these are the ones who will have to step up when we need em, and we will need em.................smitty

Wait, you need to see the game to know the first team offense scored 3 points? Hhmm, imagine that.

I remember the Patriots winning by 13 total points last year...

Well for 3800 posts I'd figure some of it wouldn't be rants......

Stallworth had a great catch downfield that was nullified by an illegal formation penalty on rookie RT Jammal Brown.
For what it's worth, Donte had a coupla head-rockin' blocks on the Seahawks friday night. Has he always blocked well?

Bouman did horrible picking up the blitz... he didn't feel the pressure once and caused him to fumble. After that he didn't take any other deep drop backs. 3 step -pass. I mean he is 'ok' for a back up but I'd take Kingsburry backing up Brooks and Amack in the 3rd spot for this year.

TallySaint 08-15-2005 10:24 AM

3 step -pass
Would that possibly be against the blitz? Or a designed play? Hmm...I wonder. I'll watch him a little closer. Thanks.

The Game

I was also very disappointed in the score until I saw the game. Brooks looked sharp. The Oline + Karney were just destroying the Seahawk DLine, and the Dfense looked excellent vs. Alexander.
So what if our second and third stringers sucked vs. their second and third stringers. Now we know who to cut, Jason Craft I am talking to you.
AMac looked awesome! He just throws lasers and besides lining up behind the guard instead of the center he moved the team very nicely down the field. Nice knowing you Klingsbury.

Euphoria 08-15-2005 11:17 AM

RE: The Game

I think Bouman is the odd man out... are at least he should be. To be a vet and not be able to feel pressure and just like like a kid standing there... aside from one good pass to Boo... I thought Kingsburry did better and Amac looked good because he was running for his life. He did have some sharp tight passes give him sometime and he'll end up being a starter.

I guess you're talking about the fumble? Yeah, that was bonehead. Aside from that and a coupla others....One good pass? We must not have been watching the same game. Oh well, we all can't agree on everything, I suppose.

...and just so you know. I have no loyalty to or agenda against any of the quarterbacks (or any player, for that matter). I do have a few I'd really like to do well - ex-Seminoles, etc.

If I think someone really stunk it up I'll definately say so.

Have a nice day, Mrs. Kingsbury.

Euphoria 08-15-2005 11:55 AM

oh yeah and lets not forget bouman's INT.

Euphoria 08-15-2005 11:57 AM

Even the announcers mention the one good pass nice touch on it it was fine...

"Backup quarterback Todd Bouman turned over the ball on two of his first five plays. He lost a fumble when Leroy Hill beat Aaron Stecker's block for a blindside sack. Joe Tafoya recovered the loose ball, which set up a 24-yard touchdown run by backup quarterback Seneca Wallace.

On the next series, Bouman threw an ill-advised deep pass into double coverage that was picked off by John Howell. "

"Reserve Kliff Kingsbury and McPherson each had their share of flashes in the fourth quarter but were unable to sustain them for prolonged stretches. Kingsbury completed four of seven passes for 73 yards, including a 57-yard bomb to Michael Lewis. McPherson showcased his all-around athletic skills, running for 25 yards on four carries and completing three of seven passes for 28 yards. "

BoudinSandwich 08-16-2005 03:12 AM

1. Brooks did not run directly into the blitz.
(This is a flat out lie. I don't know how anyone could miss this. If you understand how the offensive line is supposed to block, then you would realize that Brooks did not use his protection as it was designed. People that don't understand this are the same ones that (when playing a game of Madden) hike the ball, run backwards with their quarterback until they see someone open downfield and bomb the ball to them. Its a complete misunderstanding of the position, something the new quarterback version of Madden was designed to stop.)

2. Joe Horn got a hand on the ball that was thrown down field.
(Yes, he did...as well as two defenders. It was a jump ball into double coverage.)

3. Bouman played decent.
(This is another flat out lie. Yes, someone missed an assignment and Bouman lost a fumble. However, the worst that should have happened on that play was Bouman getting sacked. Bouman had the ball stripped because he had it at his hips. This is a slap in the face if a quarterback coach. Its a matter of basic mechanics. Bouman also freaked out because of the pressure he had and instead of throwing the ball out of bounds, he through it downfield into coverage. It was a foolish play. The second Bouman released the ball, Archie Manning could be heard saying "Uh oh!" That was a move thats common for a rookie. Bouman has played in this league too long to make a mistake like that.)

Yes, all quarterbacks in the NFL make mistakes. However, guys like Brooks and Bouman have been playing way too long in the NFL to make ROOKIE mistakes. They both looked incredibly nervous and uncomfortable in the game.

I'm sorry guys. We must have been watching two different games.

jnormand 08-16-2005 03:44 AM

I will wait until the game against the Pats to freak out. I really don't put a lot of faith in preseason. The game against the Pats should be a good indicator of how the O and the D will play. Obviously I'm not concerned with how the ENTIRE 2nd or 3rd teams play. At the most, we may see 2 or 3 of those guys on the feild with the 1st team in a real game. If our entire 2nd and 3rd team look like crap, you have to realize that only a select few will be playing against a team in a game. And to boot, they will be playing with the rest of the 1st teamers.

If the first team QB or RB is playing bad, then I get concerned. I'll save my opinions for after the game against the Pats. Lets hope the Saints can give them a challange.
