Donte's attitude

... I was watching another preseason game where I saw a staring QB very involved with the play of the 2nd, 3rd, and even the 4th string QB, from dicussing plays to cheering the other QBs' play...

... Donte was in the sideline doing the same thing with the receivers... saw him a couple times talking with Devery and going through a couple of plays, patting guys in the back... good to see that attitude in a young man...

Good. Very good.

I commented on a previous topic that one of the knocks against the team was we were more "me" than "we". Call me crazy, but the Saints may have a different attitude in that regard. "Meshing" is a big part of the puzzle, me thinks.

Good point, T. :)

Did you guys see the Packers opener? They showed an interview of Favre, who said it's not my job to train the newbie - it's his own job to learn and ask the right questions. The announcers supported him.

Two different styles. Of the two, I prefer to see the one that Donte is showing.

Early in the 1st Qtr of the Seattle game I saw duce make an nice run.
Not that unusual - The commentators were discussing how Duce likes to run behing a full back and how much more comfortable he was with a lead blocker.
They replayed the run to show FB blocking - But what I saw made me much happier.
I saw Donte lay a great block that got Duce through the hole.
It gave me hope that Donte was going to be on the field alot this year showing why we drafted him.

LOE-

Do you think that it's on the rookie to approach the vets for guidance, or do you think it should be the mentor type, where the vet takes the rookie under his wing?

LordOfEntropy 08-15-2005 05:28 PM

I buy more into option 1 - I think it's the new kid's job to learn the ropes, it's not the vet's job to do the teaching. The kid must make it happen. Nobody else is responsible for him, at least, not the players. So I take Favre's view on this one. Teaching the kids is a coach's job.

But which of the two is nicer to see? Option 2. It's nice to see a vet taking a kid under his wing. But it's never -required-, it's simply not his job. It's just nice to see.

Does that sum it up?

Yep. Thanks LOE.

I think it is a vet's job to help out others on his team. No, you can't mandate it and the coaches need to be giving the rook the big picture, but the vet should supplement that with some finer points to help him learn. That's part of what being a team is.

BlackandBlue 08-15-2005 05:37 PM

Yup.

Had a conversation this morning with some coworkers, over the exact same thing. "Did you hear Favre's comments?"

"Yeah....and???"

"Well, do you agree with him?"

"Yeah....and???"

"But don't you think that feeds into the rumor from a few years back that labeled him as a narcissistic a-hole?"

"He plays football. They're not exactly paid to be sweet. And do you really believe that if Aaron wanted to do a little Q&A, that Favre would deny him?"

"Well.....no."

"Then what is your ****-ing problem."

"I hate talking to you about football."

This came from a Falcons fan. But I forgive him. ;)

LordOfEntropy 08-15-2005 05:44 PM

HaHa, gotta be a Falcons fan.

Euphoria 08-15-2005 05:47 PM

Well you have to want to play and you have to want to learn... Farve shouldn't be come here youngster this is what you need to do... Farve has enought things to do...

Exactly the point I was leading up to, until my Falcons "buddy" got frustrated and walked away from the conversation.
And I agree with what you said, Scotty, about the whole "team" concept, but I feel like it's the responsibility of the rook. Your starting QB can't be running around making sure that the rookie is doing what he's supposed to be doing. He's got enough burden on his shoulders. I mean, we all know the top position that usually gets all the blame, don't we? ;)

So, when Favre is standing on the sidelines watching his D get run over, he's too busy to give a tip to a rookie? I'm not saying he needs to be coaching, but if he spots something that might help, he should definitely bring it up.

Unless it's the 4th, and someone's getting blown out, he's not thinking about the defense. Maybe you're referring to the preseason, and I'm thinking all season long.

Yeah, but if Favre didnt take an attitude like that he would probably have to have the 3rd string QB surgically removed from his ass before every game.
