Unconfirmed reports say Linebacker Jonathan Vilma may have already been dealt to the New Orleans Saints "with the Jets getting a conditional draft pick, probably in 2009, based on Vilma's performance."  Announcement to come early in the morning.

Tom Rock of newsday.com reported at 11:35pm CST on Thursday evening that "a deal sending Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma to the Saints will be completed and announced as early as this morning (Friday), according to NFL sources."  The deal would send Vilma to the Saints for a conditional draft pick in 2009 based on his performance with the Saints.

Unconfirmed But...

{sidebar id=9}Black and Gold sources have reason to believe the Vilma signing may be true which would confirm another story Black and Gold broke earlier this week that the Saints were interested in meeting with LB Jonathan Vilma and CB Asante Samuel.  There is still a lot of speculation about the Asante Samuel deal, especially since he will probably go to the highest bidder.  Some have claimed it's a done deal, while others like myself are waiting for final results.

Regardless, free-agency has taken on a new face even more exciting than draft day in recent years because teams are addressing needs by shifting and trading leading to the possibility of immediate impact on the field.   Mickey Loomis and the Saints front office appear to be very aggressive in strengthening the defensive side of the ball this off-season, something the New Orleans Saints organization hasn't addressed in way too many years.

The New Orleans Saints promoted Greg McMahon to special teams coordinator and Dennis Allen to secondary coach, general manager Mickey Loomis announced on Monday.

Both McMahon and Allen joined the Saints with coach Sean Payton's original staff in 2006. McMahon was the assistant special teams coach. He replaces John Bonamego, who left to become special teams coordinator of the Miami Dolphins.

Allen enters his third season in New Orleans. He was an assistant defensive line coach for his first two years with the team and replaces Tom Hayes on the Saints' coaching staff. A spokesman for the Saints said he didn't know why Hayes left the organization.

Struggling New Orleans Saints receiver Robert Meachem impresses in offseason

One of the most encouraging signs of the New Orleans Saints' recently-concluded offseason workouts was the play of second-year wide receiver Robert Meachem.

Meachem, healthy now after being inactive for all 16 games of his rookie season because of a knee injury that bothered him throughout training camp, appears ready to make a strong run at becoming the third wide receiver this fall.

After receiving praise from Saints coach Sean Payton, general manager Mickey Loomis and quarterback Drew Brees for his attitude and work ethic in the spring, Meachem will at least go into training camp with much more confidence than last season.

As a result, he will likely battle veterans Devery Henderson and Lance Moore for the third spot behind starters Marques Colston and David Patten. The job is Meachem's for the taking since Henderson and Moore each went through periods of inconsistency a year ago.

Meachem has been solid this spring now that he can get on the field. Last season, he injured an ankle in a rookie minicamp and then hurt his right knee in the full-squad minicamp. The two injuries ultimately wrecked his rookie season before it even started.

In addition to Henderson and Moore, Meachem will also battle seventh-round draft pick Adrian Arrington for a roster spot. Arrington, who was projected to be drafted much higher than he was, also turned some heads during the team's minicamps and organized team activities.

But as far as the speedy Meachem is concerned, the more competition there is the better because he's healthy again.

And there's a bounce in his step as well after the fans who were calling him a bust last season were cheering him during the recent minicamp.

"My confidence is coming back," he said. "Everything is rolling now. You hear everything (the fans) do. You want to have a great practice to show them you're coming back strong."
