{sidebar id=9}A fluky injury on a crazy play has ended Saints cornerback Mike McKenzie's season, making New Orleans' slim playoff hopes even slimmer. Saints coach Sean Payton said Monday that McKenzie tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while nearly recovering Donovan McNabb's fumble in what turned out to be Philadelphia's first touchdown in the Eagles 38-23 victory in New Orleans on Sunday.

McKenzie has been placed on injured reserve, as has reserve running back Jamaal Branch, who fractured his right leg during kickoff coverage.

Players were given Christmas Eve and Christmas Day off, so McKenzie was not available for comment. He'll need reconstructive surgery, followed by months of rehabilitation, which may affect his ability to participate fully in practices when training camp opens next August.

Next season, McKenzie will be in the fourth year of his current five-year, $22 million contract with the Saints.

McKenzie had been the Saints' best defensive back this season, returning a pair of interceptions for touchdowns and being chosen as an NFC alternate for the Pro Bowl.

He was the first player to arrive at the loose ball resulting from McNabb's fumble, but the ball squirted into the end zone after he tried to fall on it at the 2-yard line. McKenzie then quickly bounced up to give chase before collapsing in the end zone.

It was one of several error-filled plays Sunday that cost New Orleans (7-8) a chance to take control of the race for the final wild-card spot in the NFC.

This week with the Saints chances of a playoff birth coming down to the final game, the Saints will face the Chicago Bears. This game is a must win for the Saints to keep their chances of making the playoffs alive. In order for the Saints to pull out a victory this week, they will need to play a football game without any turnovers.

Player of the Game

This week’s Player of the Game for the Saints is a split between two players who seemed to do the most to try and help put the team into the best position they could to win the game. The first is wide receiver David Patten who had six catches for 55 yards. Overall Patten didn’t have his brightest game since joining the team, but he once again proved himself as a reliable target who is able to keep his hands on the ball. Hopefully the Saints will keep Patten under contract for a few more years while the receiving core continues to develop. The other Player of the Game for the Saints is kicker Martin Gramatica. Gramatica was 3 for 3 on field goals with a long of 55 yards and 2 for 2 on extra points. He helped to provide the Saints with more flexibility offensively with his reliable place kicking. Overall these two players helped provide some extra support for Drew Brees and the Saints and although it wasn’t enough, it hopefully will give the Saints upper management some encouragement to make sure they hold onto both of these players beyond this season.

Saints vs. Bears Game Preview

This week with the Saints chances of a playoff birth coming down to the final game, the Saints will face the Chicago Bears. This game is a must win for the Saints to keep their chances of making the playoffs alive. In order for the Saints to pull out a victory this week, they will need to play a football game without any turnovers. So far this season turnovers have plagued the Saints in their losses and with the Bears still having a very solid defense, they will need to avoid giving their opponents any additional help. Offensively the Saints will need to establish the run so that the Bears can’t consistently rush the passer, which should open up the play action pass for Drew Brees. On the defense the Saints will likely have to play a lot of zone to make up for the loss of McKenzie to their secondary. Hopefully doing this will limit the big plays for the bears and allow the Saints a chance to pull out a victory.

Psycho’s View

First, let me begin this week’s SSW Psycho’s View article by saying that barring some amazing surprise in the final week of the season, the Saints truly are out of the playoff run. That being the case, barring a surprise that allows the Saints to sneak into the playoffs, the SSW is going back to its usual off-season bi-weekly publication. As many of you know, a couple of years ago I began moving the SSW to a publication every other week during the off-season. However, if the Saints do make the playoffs by some twist of luck, then next week’s issue will be published until their season ends. Overall I must say that this was a very disappointing season for the Saints, one that could best be described as a season plagued by injuries. However, the Saints still have several needs that they need to address in the off-season, most on the defensive side on the ball, although the offense could use a bit of fine tooling itself. Most importantly, I am hoping that the Saints are watching closely the performance by their new kicker in the absence of Mare. The kicking game over the past two games has been automatic and perhaps the Saints will make the smart move & keep Gramatica considering his strong performance for the Saints so far this year.
