Bashing is the name of the game when the New Orleans Saints lose. Saints star running back Reggie Bush is not immune. After fumbling a pitch-back reverse late in the game against the Bucs on Sunday, Reggie Bush reads more like George Bush in the media, forums and Saints blogisphere. There was a fumble that Reggie Bush was fortunate to recover. There were two short passes that slipped through his hands. Then there was the inaccurate, no-look toss on a botched trick play that may go down as the moment New Orleans truly blew its chance to get back into playoff contention.
Yet, more than any of those, the images that seemed to symbolize Bush's difficult second season occurred off the field at the end of the Saints' 27-23 loss to Tampa Bay.Bush was walking toward the tunnel leading to the Louisiana Superdome locker room while what was initially called a fumble by Saints kick returner Lance Moore was in the process of being overturned. There were 14 seconds left, and head coach Sean Payton had to run Bush down and angrily order him back to the bench.
After the game, Bush sat in front of his locker for more than a half hour, still in uniform, with his hands on his head as he stared at the floor. He declined to speak with reporters.
On Monday, he was absent while reporters were permitted to talk with players in the locker room at the team's suburban training facility. READ MORE AT WGSO.COMIn a New York Times article titled "Promising Season Is Bouncing Away From Saints’ Bush," Times writer JERÉ LONGMAN writes, "This is not the season Bush had planned, on or off the field." Longman digs up some forgotten dirt reminding us that Reggie Bush "is being sued by a sports marketer who is seeking to recover nearly $300,000 in cash and gifts that he claims were provided to Bush and his family while Bush was a running back at Southern California..." and if the N.C.A.A. finds Bush guilty, "one of the penalties could be a revocation of the Heisman Trophy he won in 2005." READ MORE AT NYTIMES.COMIn forums everywhere, not excluding BlackandGold.com, the fans are asking "if reggie would've gotten the ball to henderson everyone would be calling Payton a genius today instead of calling for his job." READ MORE IN THE FORUMSRotoworld.com, a fantasy football news source and fan site had a poster in their forum writes, "Every week this guy is listed as a #1 RB, and from the past couple weeks it seems like he cant put up #3 rb #'s.....He is in his second year, he had the starting job for awhile now and he still cannot put up 100yds rushing...he has score under 10points in my league the past few weeks, while ryan grant sits on my bunch.....is it me or is he the most overrated fantasy back." Here's the latest confounding result for the maddeningly inconsistent New Orleans Saints: Their most impressive rushing performance of the season came without either of their star running backs. With the discovery of Reggie Bush's torn knee ligament last week and with Deuce McAllister having gone out for the season back in Week 3, the Saints lined up in Atlanta on Monday night with a running back tandem of veteran third-stringer Aaron Stecker and undrafted rookie Pierre Thomas.
Combined with Devery Henderson's 15-yard gain on an end-around, New Orleans rushed for 145 total yards, better than in any of their previous 12 games.
"We have guys that stepped up and played real well last night," Payton said Tuesday after he reviewed game film. "You're going to lose some players. ... You know you're going to have to rely on some other players during their time off. That's just the reality of our game. Hopefully you can still have consistency within your attack, either on defense or offense and in your kicking game."
The Saints aren't saying whether they think they'll get Bush back at all this season. Payton said he expected to have some sort of update on Wednesday afternoon.
Bush has a torn left posterior cruciate ligament, which does not require surgery but likely would require at least a month to heal enough for him to play again.
The Saints have only three games left in the regular season, but at 6-7 still remain only a game behind Minnesota for the final wild-card playoff spot in the NFC.
Should the Saints place Bush on injured reserve it would mean they believe his injury is serious enough that he could not help even if New Orleans made the playoffs.

It won't be a high noon showdown for the Black & Gold. Fox Sports has moved their rematch with the Bucanneers to 3pm. But, the Saints and their 2007 season are still squarely in the line of fire.
The mediocre NFC has taken parity in the NFL to a whole new level. Only 3 out of 16 teams in the conference are really out of contention for the playoffs. And any of those 3 can beat a so-called NFC contenders on a given week (i.e. Rams over Saints; Niners over Cardinals).
For the Saints, a year expected to show growth from NFC contender to true NFC power has turned somewhat sour. An unproductive draft and weak free agency moves have done little to improve the team. As a result, the Saints are squarely in the hunt for a playoff berth...but not much more.
Tampa Bay leads the Saints in the NFC South by 2 games with a game in hand over New Orleans thanks to a big win over the Saints in week 2. The Saints can avenge the beatdown by the bay. They better do so, or the division is lost.
More importantly, the Saints' confidence and very legitimacy is on the line Sunday. Thumping Jacksonville a few weeks ago was a grand achievement. It showed what the Saints can do when they are hitting on all cylinders. But, can they now call upon that kind of gusto when they need it most? Right now?
Regardless of whether the Saints can come back and win the division, the Saints must beat the Bucs if they are to have any confidence in themselves for the rest of the year.
Sean Payton must find a way for his team to beat a team that looks to be the 3rd best team in the NFC. While the Cowboys and Packers face off Thrusday night to likely determine home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs, the Saints must prove they can hang with the kind of team (if not THE team) they would face in the first round of the playoffs.
If the Saints' struggling secondary cannot handle a one-man show in Joey Galloway, they will not be able to win in the post-season even if they claw their way there.
And can the Saints run the ball efficiently against a good defense without Deuce? We'll know the answer after Sunday.
In fact, we'll know a lot after the Bucs game. Are games in Seattle and at home versus the Jags just blips on the radar? Or can New Orleans compete with the mid-level big boys when it counts in '07?
The Saints will either thrive on Gutcheck Sunday...or leave the Dome with a gutshot to their hopes for contention.

"It's good now that we are clicking out there," McNabb said after leading the Eagles to a 38-23 triumph over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. "I hope we can use this winning feeling into next year."
The Eagles (7-8) won't be a playoff team this season, but have played like one in their past two games, beginning with their upset of the Cowboys in Dallas.
McNabb accounted for 300 total yards and tossed three touchdown passes against New Orleans, dealing a devastating blow to a Saints squad clinging to playoff hopes.
The Eagles' triumph snapped a two-game winning streak for the Saints (7-8), who stayed alive when the Washington Redskins beat the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.
The Saints need to win at Chicago next Sunday, combined a Washington loss at home against Dallas, and a Minnesota loss at Denver, to claim the final wild card spot.
McNabb, whose 263 yards passing gave him 25,059 for his career, no longer showed the effects of his rehabilitation from knee surgery over the summer or an ankle sprain in midseason.
His 40-yard scramble on the third play led to a bizarre touchdown after his fumble was recovered in the end zone by receiver Kevin Curtis. McNabb also used his scrambling ability to neutralize the Saints' pass rush and give his receivers more time to get open.

"I'm getting my mobility back," McNabb said. "I'm definitely feeling better and being able to get opportunities for guys by holding the ball a little bit longer."
Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw for 289 yards and an interception. He lost his best receiver when Marques Colston left the game in the first half with a chest contusion that had him spitting up blood.
Still, the Saints were in position to tie the game at 21 on the opening drive of the second half when David Patten nearly scored on a short first-down pass.
