Top-rated player in state passes on 34 other schools

Cypress Ridge quarterback Russell Shepard, regarded as the top high school player in the area, announced Monday that he would commit to reigning national champion LSU.

"LSU is a good school and a good fit for me," Shepard told Scout.com. "The recruiting stuff was getting hectic, so I wanted to get it out of the way early so I could focus on my upcoming season. I know LSU is where I want to go."

The 6-2, 185-pound Shepard chose the Tigers over the likes of Texas, Texas A&M, Florida and Michigan, who were among the 35 schools that offered him a scholarship.

Shepard ran for 1,525 yards and 18 touchdowns while passing for 794 yards and seven scores during the 2007 season, where he helped lead the Rams to an 11-2 record. He is rated by Scout.com as the top player in the state and the No. 8 player in the nation.
