Mizzou 14th member of SEC Officially

The Southeastern Conference says it will add Missouri to the league, starting next football season.
The SEC released a statement Sunday saying the conference's presidents and chancellors, acting unanimously, announced Missouri will join the league effective July 1, 2012.
Missouri will be leaving the Big 12.
The addition of Missouri will increase SEC membership to 14 schools, including Texas A&M, which announced last month that it was also leaving the Big 12 for the SEC.

Missouri's move to the SEC for the 2012-13 academic year has been completed, ushering in a new era of 14 teams for the conference, which announced the move in a statement Sunday morning.

"I am pleased to officially welcome the University of Missouri to the SEC family on behalf of our presidents, chancellors, athletics directors, students and fans," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in the news release. "Missouri is an outstanding academic institution with a strong athletic program. We look forward to having the Tigers compete in our league starting in 2012."

Missouri's move to the SEC in 2012 could mirror West Virginia's to the Big 12 in 2012 in its uncertainty. A source recently told ESPN.com's Andy Katz that Missouri could have trouble getting out of the Big 12 because the league isn't sure if it can get the Mountaineers in from the Big East next season.

Texas A&M's move from the Big 12 to the SEC was finalized last month.

The Tigers' and Aggies' moves to the SEC will follow the league's expansion plan of adding schools in new markets and states (Missouri/St. Louis, Texas/Houston).

It also bumps up the SEC's number of Association of American Universities from two to four with the additions of Texas A&M and Missouri. Vanderbilt and Florida were the only two AAU members in the SEC.

"The Southeastern Conference is a highly successful, stable, premier athletic conference that offers exciting opportunities for the University of Missouri," school chancellor Brady J. Deaton said in the SEC statement. "In joining the SEC, MU partners with universities distinguished for their academic programs and their emphasis on student success."

Missouri fields 20 varsity sports. They include men's baseball, basketball, football, golf, swimming and diving, wrestling, indoor and outdoor track and field and cross country. Women's sports include basketball, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and cross country and volleyball.

After distancing itself from the Big 12 in stages the last few weeks, Mizzou's SEC-ession from a conference it's been part of in various forms for more than a century is complete.
The Southeastern Conference on Sunday morning announced Mizzou as its 14th member, effective in 2012-2013.
"The Presidents and Chancellors of the Southeastern Conference are pleased to welcome the University of Missouri to the SEC," said Dr. Bernie Machen, president of the SEC Presidents and Chancellors and president of the University of Florida, said in a statement. "The University of Missouri is a prestigious academic institution with a strong athletic tradition and a culture similar to our current institutions."
Mizzou will hold a "celebration" at 4:30 p.m. at the Student Center in Columbia with Machen and SEC commissioner Mike Slive joining MU Chancellor Brady Deaton and athletic director Mike Alden.
It's believed MU will be placed in the SEC East with Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
It's also believed that Mizzou and Texas A&M will be made cross-divisional rivals who play every season, a development that could help MU maintain a recruiting foothold in Texas that it fears losing after mining so much talent there in recent years.
"The Southeastern Conference is a highly successful, stable, premier athletic conference that offers exciting opportunities for the University of Missouri," MU chancellor Brady Deaton said in the SEC statement, adding, "The SEC will provide our student-athletes with top flight competition and unparalleled visibility. We came to this decision after careful consideration of the long term best interests of our university. We believe the Southeastern Conference is an outstanding home for the Mizzou Tigers, and we take great pride in our association

After weeks of winks and nods, curator meetings, an inadvertent press release and a canceled overseas trip, the Southeastern Conference broke the silence on the worst-kept secret in college sports: The Missouri Tigers are coming.

In a press release posted on the SEC website Sunday morning, the league announced that its presidents and chancellors voted unanimously to make Missouri its 14th member, effective July 1, 2012, with competition to begin in all sports for the 2012-13 academic year.

Missouri will host a public celebration and press conference at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the MU Student Center. Chancellor Brady Deaton, Athletic Director Mike Alden, Florida President Bernie Machen and SEC Commissioner Mike Slive are expected to attend.

“The Presidents and Chancellors of the Southeastern Conference are pleased to welcome the University of Missouri to the SEC,” Machen said in a prepared statement. “The University of Missouri is a prestigious academic institution with a strong athletic tradition and a culture similar to our current institutions.”

Machen is also the president of the SEC presidents and chancellors.

“The Southeastern Conference is a highly successful, stable, premier athletic conference that offers exciting opportunities for the University of Missouri,” Deaton said in the same release. “In joining the SEC, MU partners with universities distinguished for their academic programs and their emphasis on student success. The SEC will provide our student-athletes with top flight competition and unparalleled visibility. We came to this decision after careful consideration of the long term best interests of our university. We believe the Southeastern Conference is an outstanding home for the Mizzou Tigers, and we take great pride in our association with this distinguished league.”

It’s unclear when SEC presidents voted on Missouri’s candidacy or when MU formally applied for membership. Missouri is expected to join the SEC East Division, multiple university sources indicated two weeks ago.

“I am pleased to officially welcome the University of Missouri to the SEC family on behalf of our presidents, chancellors, athletics directors, students and fans,” Slive said. “Missouri is an outstanding academic institution with a strong athletic program. We look forward to having the Tigers compete in our league starting in 2012.”

The SEC release cites Missouri’s membership in the Association of American Universities, of which only three other SEC schools are members: Florida, Vanderbilt and fellow SEC newcomer Texas A&M. With an enrollment of 33,800, MU will become the fourth-largest school in the SEC, the release stated, trailing only Florida, Georgia and Texas A&M.

Be careful what you wish for.... You're playing with the big boys now...

Halo 11-07-2011 11:45 PM

Said it before, Mizzou has to seriously step up their game and pump money into that chicken chit program. They strangle it and it's not serious.

They have to take it seriously now or they will be bottom dwellers. I don't know where they feel they will fit in....

But I do believe they have the potential!!!
