Tyrann Mathieu undergoing drug rehab in Houston, source confirms

Former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has put his playing career on hold to undergo drug rehabilitation at a Houston clinic, where he has been since Monday.
A source confirmed to the Times-Picayune the media report that Mathieu was in rehab indefinitely. The Heisman finalist and All-American who was kicked off the team Aug. 10 for failing multiple drug tests, was expected to transfer to a Football Championship Subdivision team soon but his uncle, Tyrone Mathieu, told Fox-8 that Mathieu's health is the family's biggest concern.
Mathieu is under the guidance of former NBA guard John Lucas at Right Step recovery in Houston.
Lucas, the NBA's No. 1 pick in 1976, has worked as a counselor to athletes with substance abuse problems after cocaine and alcohol troubles disrupted his career. He worked for a short time with former LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who was the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft in 2007.
LSU Coach Les Miles spoke with Mathieu on Tuesday night when Mathieu was exploring the possibility of a return to LSU in 2013.
Miles said he advised Mathieu "just to make a great decision, do the right things. He'll do that.
"I just wanted him to know we'll support him in whatever he wants to do. At this point in time he has to do the things that make him happy and make sense for his future. Then we'll all be happy."
Mathieu was booted off the team Friday and visited McNeese State the same day and also has expressed interest in Nicholls State. Bothy are FCS schools (Division 1-AA) where Mathieu would become eligible immediately.

Drugs, a Demon. Getting help is the first step. Good Luck to him.

Clearly it's more than a party for him. If it wasn't, he would have went to a lower division school, kept his nose clean, no pun intended, lit it up, no pun intended, and this time next year would be in the NFL. But, one of the worst things for someone who abuses drugs is free time. A whole year away from the one constant in his life, football, is really going to test him. Hopefully, he will pass it. No pun intended.

With a drug reputation, going to a lesser school and keeping it clean isn't going to get him drafted. His best bet is to rehab and get back into a big Div I school and play at least 1 full season.

Again, the NFL is passing on people who take the easy road of heading to lower division schools. It's hypocritical for any school's football program to accept the kid knowing he has a drug problem. What makes him different at McNeese or LSU or Ohio State for that matter with the same drug problem?

I respect this kid because his family guided him in the right direction. They also said Tyrann wants his degree. People don't consider that part, a respectable desire. Good for him on his decisions! He can possibly be a role model when he completes his goals.
