Honey Badger, 3 other former LSU players arrested
Four former LSU football players, including former Heisman finalist Tyrann "Honey Badger" Mathieu, were arrested Thursday on drug-related offenses, according to a press release from the Baton Rouge, La., police.
![]() Mathieu, former starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson and former defensive backs Karnell Hatcher and Derrick Bryant were on charges ranging from possession of marijuana to possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, according to the release. The arrests were first reported by Baton Rouge TV station WAFB. This the latest misstep for Mathieu, who was dismissed from the LSU football program in August after repeated violations of the school's substance abuse policy for athletes. Mathieu, along with cornerback Tharold Simon and running back Spencer Ware, was suspended for a game against Auburn last October after testing positive for synthetic marijuana. Another failed drug test led LSU and head coach Les Miles to remove Mathieu from the team altogether on Aug. 10. "This is a very difficult day for our team," Miles said at the press conference announcing Mathieu's dismissal. "He was a quality, quality guy. He had behavior issues. The overview of his time with us is positive." The former all-American cornerback had since reenrolled at the school, taking classes in hopes of returning to the team for the 2013 season. Jefferson was a multiple-year starter at quarterback for LSU. He led the Tigers to the SEC championship and a spot in the BCS National Championship Game as a senior. The arrests occurred on Thursday afternoon after officers were sent to a Baton Rouge apartment complex in reference to a man, later identified as Jefferson, attempting to push his way through a security gate, said Baton Rouge police. Jefferson exchanged words with a maintenance worker before going into an apartment in the complex. Mathieu answered the door to the apartment when police arrived at the scene, according to the police department's news release. "Officers immediately smelled a strong odor of marijuana and obtained consent from Mathieu to search the apartment", said the release. "Inside they found three other men, including the one who had allegedly tried to force his way through the gate. He was identified as Jordan Jefferson," police said. The other two individuals in the apartment were identified as Hatcher and Bryant. A search of the apartment yielded a marijuana grinder, digital scale and 10 bags of high grade marijuana. Seven of the 10 bags were found inside Bryant's backpack, said police. While Mathieu, Jefferson and Hatcher were charged on possession charges, Bryant was charged with Possession With Intent to Distribute Marijuana. Link Back | |
