The name is legendary. And the car doesn't look half bad, either.
Chevrolet has unveiled the 2014 Corvette Stingray, resurrecting a model designation last used in 1976.
The seventh generation of the front-engine coupe retains the Corvette's familiar two-door hatchback shape, but with an all-new aluminum chassis and and dramatically designed bodywork made of composites and carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Vents in the hood and fenders allow air to pass through the body to reduce aerodynamic lift, while a combination of polygonal taillights and rear quarter windows are a new look for the car. Although not yet available as a convertible, a removable roof panel is standard.

Under the hood is Chevy's latest 6.2-liter small block V8 featuring direct injection and variable valve timing that make it the most powerful base engine ever offered in a Corvette. With at least 450 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, Chevrolet promises a zero to 60 time of under four seconds.
Cylinder deactivation technology that allows the engine to operate as a V4 under light loads, and a seven-speed manual transmission should also improve fuel economy beyond the current Corvette's 26 mpg highway. The gearbox is fitted with a clever rev-matching feature that automatically blips the throttle during during gear changes for smoother shifts, and a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters will be optional.
Special attention was paid to the interior, long the Corvette's major shortcoming. The new one is trimmed in upgraded materials, including Napa leather, aluminum, and carbon fiber, and is fitted with configurable 8-inch displays in both the instrument cluster and center console. Two different seat designs are on offer, one for comfort and one for the track, both heavily bolstered and constructed on lightweight magnesium frames.
In an effort to make the Corvette an all-purpose sports car, it has a selector with five settings for wet weather, eco, tour, sport, and track that modify throttle response, stability control, steering and a host of other systems to better fit conditions or the driver's needs.

The Corvette retains its unique transverse composite spring suspension design, and a special Z51 performance package is available with or without GM's renowned Magnetic Ride Control active damper system. The track-focused package also comes with modified aerodynamics, bigger brakes with improved cooling, differential and transmission coolers, an electronic limited slip differential and a dry sump oiling system engineered to keep up with the 1G cornering loads the car is said to be capable of.
Pricing for the new Corvette has not been announced, but it is set to go on sale in the third quarter of 2013.

It looks like a Mistubishi 300 or 3000, whatever ... just saw one at the grocery store, same color. I'm a little disappointed that this is what GM did with our bailout money, :(.

Not really sold on this edition. The back part looks a little wierd and the design as a whole feels more like a japanese car than an american. I'd much rather by a Camaro or a Charger if I had the cash to spend.

In most the design/engineering groups I worked at GM there was an area where 'competition vehicles' from the other manufacturers were kept for us to look at. Sometimes we even had days where we'd do nothing but drive them around a test track also, those days were a lot of fun, :mrgreen:. Anyway, I used to see some of the designers in the 'competition' area taking notes, measuring stuff with calipers, et... and basically incorporating that stuff into their own designs.

That's how I think we wound up with this 'Mitsubishi' looking corvette. :( It does have it's merits, I just think they strayed too far from the Corvette tradition.

You might have very valid thoughts there. It is a little off the Corvette path. Maybe they should have kept the ovals in the rear. And lose that spoiler. But it has LED lights! :D

btw... I just saw a 90's Camaro with retrofitted LED lights in the front. Kinda weird looking.

Yeah, I think this new design trend is all part of GM 'reinventing' itself and they have been targeting foreign/asian markets, China in particular, since the mid/late 90's. I'll be interested to see the North American sales figures on this new design later in the year. I think it appeals to a younger crowd, but they're not the ones that can afford it.

I do really like the rear end on this new Corvette, looks like a Transformer ... but then, I've always been kind of a 'butt' guy, :lol:.

The day they got in bed with Obama, along with the corrupt Autoworkers Unions, was when I decided I'd never ever own a GM or Chrysler product ever.

I used to drive nothing but GM, but since the bailout, I bought a couple old Jeeps. It's kinda' Chrysler, but when you get into the nuts & bolts of the auto bailouts, Chrysler was just made more palatable for Fiat to come in and take over, where GM's deal screwed a lot of the suppliers, SE Michigan and the American taxpayer. Ford doesn't really have anything I like or can afford either, at the moment.

That's a tough looking truck, :mrgreen:. Do they have a Nissan plant in AL? When I use to drive to Proctor & Gamble in Pineville, LA, I use to pass a Nissan plant in MS, I think, and if I remember correctly, AL got an auto plant or two as well.

Toyota in Huntsville, Hyundai in Montgomery, Honda in Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz in Tuscaloosa.

Baldwin County (SE Alabama) has a megasite available and a car plant is a typical buyer for megasites. So it'll probably be another one in the next few years.

The Airplane industry is the one thats about make South Alabama explode economically.

Yeah, I knew the airline industry was big down there, when did the Mercedes plant in Tuscaloosa get there? I used to do a lot of work for BMW/Mercedes and travel to the BMW plant in South Carolina, but Mercedes in Tuscaloosa never came up.

:lol:, I used to seriously think about it a lot, but I've gotten away from the auto industry since '08 & the bailouts. I used to imagine I'd just pack up, move down south & find me some place back in the woods, near some water so I could just fish. I recently working a fishing show & went to a place in the west suburbs of Detroit called the 'Tilted Kilt'. Bought a calender & their January model is from Birmingham ... now I'm kinda' real sorry I didn't follow my dreams, :lol:.

Ha! Sorry, we have "Tilted Kilt" here in Houston... Just reading the name makes me think of a bar full of Addams apples. Most wearing skirts.

Really? The one by me only had one or two male servers each time I went in. Their uniform was drab t-shirt/drab kilt and they looked kinda' bummed because they had to haul all the ice buckets & clear the tables while the girls danced around in their bright colored kilts making all the money, :lol:. I even mentioned it to the manager & he laughed.

I'm from Louisiana and have spent way more than my fare share of time in the French Quarter....

Bar with a questionable name...... I'm not going in :)
