It is as true a gladiator sport as there is. Minimal rules, no weapons, man-o et man-o... Its not bare knuckle because they would kill each other and break hands.

Originally MMA was not just a competition among men, but it was also a competition to prove which fighting style was the best. It was Royce Gracie who won the first two (then the fourth) UFC championships - usually against opponents much larger than him - using a little-know martial art form called Brazilian ju-jitsu. Today's MMA artists are now for the most part well-rounded fighters that are versed in the different styles of martial art, not just in one fighting discipline.
