A local HS team near me is facing pressure to change their mascot. Not 15 miles from the first shots of the Revolutionary war the School is
known as The Colonials. Nothing is safe.

Well, if take away Indians, you gotta take away Cowboys too, right? Every team that has an animal mascot must go because of PETA/WWF. Can’t have Packers because of vegans, can’t have Giants or Titans cause of possibility of offending people of small stature. No Raiders or Buccaneers because it promotes violent crime, no Saints or Devils because of religious implications. Chiefs obviously gotta go. No Jets or Edmonton Oilers because it promotes carbon emissions. But don’t worry, it will ALWAYS be fashionable to insult inebriated, belligerent Irishmen over at South Bend !

It’s definitely not a bad word. It’s an inaccurate word, but not a bad one. I think the biggest issue the Native American community had was the logo. I don’t know though. I can’t speak for them. I don’t keep up with baseball.

I’m sure there are other ways to name a team that honor a group of people. I haven’t heard anything about the Seminoles, Aztecs, or Chiefs. The Washington Redtails would be cool. The Washington Blacks or Washington Negroes? Not so much.

Here the University of Utah works closely with the Ute tribe. The tribe has the right to pull the plug on anything the University does that they might find offensive. I don't know that it's ever come up. Otherwise, polls here show the tribe is proud of being the mascot.

How bout the Atlanta Falcons they truly give a very proud and majestic bird a bad name.
I and many others here could surely come up with another name for this team.

Only problem is our Mods would be working overtime with some of the suggested names.
