Ed Reed Suspended for 1 Game
Ravens S Ed Reed suspended one game for 'repeated violations' of hits rule
The NFL suspended Ravens safety Ed Reed for one game without pay for "repeated violations of the rule prohibiting hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players," the league announced oMonday. The suspension will cost Reed a $423,529 game check. Reed was flagged for a hit on Emmanuel Sanders during the Baltimore-Pittsburgh game on Sunday night. It was, the league said, Reed's third violation in the past three seasons. The league also cited a Sept. 23 hit on Deion Branch (classified as a defenseless receiver) and a Dec. 19, 2010, hit on Drew Brees (unnecessarily striking the quarterback). Reed plans to appeal his suspension, the Ravens said, and the team is expecting a response from the league no later than Wednesday. Per our Ravens Rapid Reporter Jason Butt, coach John Harbaugh was "shocked" by the news of Reed's suspension. Under the NFL's 2012 schedule of fines, "players who were fined for violations in 2010 or 2011, and whose fines were either partially or fully upheld, will be considered second and/or repeat offenders under this policy." Reed fits into that category and will be forced to miss Baltimore's game against San Diego as a result. "We cannot tolerate repeated violations of rules, especially rules related to player safety,” NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Ray Anderson said. "We will continue to take the strongest possible action to deter these types of violations and protect our players." I don't even know where to begin, but it smells like bs to me. |

Re: Ed Reed Suspended for 1 Game
Someone made a comment on NFLSirius yesterday that neither Rozelle or Tagliabue were fans of suspending players. They recognized that it hurt a team and the fans, and only exercised suspensions as a last resort.
There were also comments made about Goodell not being consistent and if this hurts the Ravens who already have hurt players play off chances and someone else didnt get the same punishment it will look very badly on Goodell. This was his third offense...yes.. But his third offense in three years. |
Re: Ed Reed Suspended for 1 Game
Total BS.
If you see the collision, it really was incidental contact, the type of incidental contact you wear a helmet for. The helmets hit logo to logo, actually. And I would still want to know why is it Pierre Thomas can be knocked unconscious on an obvious spear, and not even an eyebrow is raised. |
Suspension reversed on appeal!
Bad Goodell. |

Hearing the NFL spokesman talking about this on Mike and Mike today was pretty painful. The things he was saying about being able to adjust to a change in the trajectory of the receiver didn't make a bit of logical sense. Also, the throwing around the term "repeat offender" like he is a criminal was ridiculous as well. While they are lifting suspensions though, if they want to life a few more, that would be great. |

Watch Reed's arms. He had no intention of "wrapping up" his arms stay close to his body.

Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed weighed in on his overturned one-game suspension for repeated flagrant hits, saying that the league's new rules and fines are creating a "flag football thing." "The rules of the game have changed a whole lot since I got in the league," Reed told the Baltimore Sun. "Over my career, I've never been that guy. I don't plan on being that guy. It's a shame it even came to this point, being that I've been on the other side of hits that have been illegal toward me. I've got a lot of respect for that organization, the Steelers, and the other 30 teams in the league. I never played the game that way." Reed was originally suspended one game for his hit on Pittsburgh's Emmanuel Sanders, which would have resulted in a loss of a game check worth $423,529. After taking his case to NFL appeals officer Ted Cottrell on Monday, the suspension was lifted in lieu of a $50,000 fine. The eight-time All-Pro told the paper he recognizes the need for increased player safety rules but also sees concussions and other injuries as an unavoidable factor of the game. "If you want to stop it, stop the game," he told the Sun. "Like people say, it's starting to be a flag football thing. I have a flag football tournament. We can make this a big thing if we want. Everybody can come get in my league. It really needs to be discussed for a fine to come down like that so harshly for that hit over my career and for them to go back to 2010 for me scratching [New Orleans Saints quarterback] Drew Brees on the head, even the one that happened in Week Two with [Philadelphia Eagles quarterback] Michael Vick. C'mon man, I'm going for the ball. It's a contact sport. It's a lot that needs to be done with it, man. I'm just glad I can play with my teammates. I'm not happy with the 50 grand, but what can you do?" |
Re: Ed Reed Suspended for 1 Game
I too am very happy Ed Reed won his appeal. I seriously didn't see anything wrong with that hit.
