New York Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow will request to be traded or released after the season on the assumption that Greg McElroy starts the team’s final two games, reports the New York Daily News.

McElroy will start on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers, putting Mark Sanchez on the bench. The Jets (6-8) have already been eliminated from playoff contention with Monday night’s 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans, in which Sanchez threw four interceptions and lost a fumble.

Sanchez is guaranteed $8.25 million for next season, making it hard for the team to release him or risk taking a huge salary cap hit. NFL.com reports that it is “highly unlikely,” that Tebow will sit idle beyond this season in the wake of the team’s decision to start McElroy.

When asked about Tebow’s plan for the future, Jets head coach Rex Ryan was less than forthcoming. Tebow’s base salary for next season is scheduled to be $2.6 million.

“I can answer this question a million ways — frontward, backward, sideways, anything else,” Ryan said. “It’s my decision and I based it on a gut feeling or whatever. Everything it comes down to is, I believe it’s the best decision for our team. That’s the only factor that goes into these decisions.”

That has to be an awfully big feeling... :rolleyes:

I wouldn't trade for him but if he was released I would give him a long hard look as a backup QB. Not that I don't like CD but I believe Tebow is the better footballplayer and if anybody could utilize his strenghts its SP.

He's a novelty at QB, I wouldn't want him at anything more than 3d string. He's athletic enough, he's already in the league, he's got a good attitude, I'd like to see him play another position.

I don't think you can have an athletic QB and create a wildcat position for him anymore, the position and formation are dead and redundant

He'll end up somewhere but you can't sign him and say he'll be our wildcat QB, it doesn't work anymore since the dolphins ran it to death

I'd convert this guy to TE in a heart beat! He's so versatile,it's a shame no one has really given this guy the coaching he deserves. It's rare that you find raw talent with such a good attitude. Put this guy opposite of Jimmy and you open up all kinds of option and screen plays. I think he could give our offense another dimension. Should be able to negotiate a reasonable contract also. I say we get him while we can, but unfortunately we most likely won't.

I feel sorry for him because he believed and pushed the myth of his creation.
I am not calling Christ a creation. I am saying Tebow made a myth about his own creation, image as in Tebow had asked some actresses from Rock of Ages , the Broadway play to please remove the pictures of him with the actresses off their Twitter because of his image. There is nothing wrong with having a strong faith. I do not dislike Tebow.
It is just that Tebow created this image and it overtook everything else like his career. Tebow got involved in making this image and not so much in his career.

Wherever he lands, and I hope it is not with the Saints, you have all that with him.

I feel sorry in a way for Marc Sanchez too. He made the image and believed the creation he made of superstar qb, celebrity.
Dating and making time to seek out and date Eva Longoria mand make the celeb NYC hotspots and the papers even though they have broken up and doing the NYC thing, celebrity entertainer things. What about on the field? The field career enables him to be the famous one? Not too much going there on the field.

Drew Brees, I have to be fair, is in a small market but he has taken on tons of endorsements. Has been on Letterman, Leno, and he and his wife on Ellen (N.O. girl), how many times and things. Being on Oprah trumps any other show. His book.
YEAH, but he made it happen on the field. On the field, his career there and is first and not endorsements and being the celeb and being on tv talk shows.

The Jets really screwed this guy over. I have no idea why they even signed him. It's almost like it was for spite.

Maybe he can get signed and be a back up to a qb that he can actually learn from. Sanchez can show you what NOT to do, but that's about it. Either way, I wish Tebow the best. He was crazy fun to watch last year, and I still think about that playoff game versus the Steelers and smile. Good times.

Well if Tebow can make through NYC relatively intact, then he'll be fine in NO. He has super-models, world class skanks, evil leeches, and virgins offering their services in NY. He'd get random giggling chicks he meets at Canal st book signings tempting him in NO.

So anyway, I think they both deserve a chance to compete for jobs next year. Maybe Tebow in Jax and Sanchez in Phoenix. I can see Vick in NY or Phoenix. Alex Smith is the wild card. He may wanna buddy up with the Cards just out of spite. I think the first deal will cause a domino effect. I just cant predict which it will be.

He's an NFL Bobble Head, media darling.

I've yet to see real potential at any position in the NFL in him. Theoretically yes, however nothing is proven.

As crazy as this may sound, I think Payton could coach him up to be a really good QB. for us. Tebow a Saint, kind of fitting to me, stranger things have happened and Payton would make a statement in the process. A few years to develop, I'm in.

I would start reading the paper to see how the game went.

Tebow has bad mechanics that 2 years in the NFL and 4 years p college couldn't correct. He is not a QB.

Yeah, not as a QB, maybe as something else, but I have a feeling next season at Jacksonville is going to close the chapter on Tim Tebow.
