Cowboys’ Jones boys deflate their own football people with draft ‘philosophy’
Brandon Jones of the Dallas Morning News recalled an exchange between Assistant Director of Player Personnel Tom Ciskowski and Chief Operating Officer, Executive Vice President, and Director of Player Personnel Stephen Jones during the team's live feed of the "war room" during the first round.
[Head coach Jason] Garrett, at one point, had a blank look across his face as he started rubbing his forehead with his hand. Ciskowski and Stephen Jones also had an animated exchange. It was a rare show of emotion by Ciskowski. There's good reason for the Cowboys' actual football people to be incensed by the pick. Jones, whose only real football qualification appear to be his status as owner Jerry Jones' son, later told the media that the team had LSU safety Eric Reid in the mix as the second-rated safety on their board behind Texas' Kenny Vaccaro, who the New Orleans Saints took with the 15th pick, but thought there was more value in trading down and grabbing an extra third-round pick. The 49ers, a team that seems to know a thing or two about player personnel, immediately took Reid with the pick Dallas vacated. And Frederick, for his part, told a Dallas radio station that even he didn't believe he'd be taken when he was. Y! SPORTS  |
Re: Cowboys’ Jones boys deflate their own football people with draft ‘philosophy’
ESPN's Ed Werder polled five NFL teams about Cowboys first-round G/C Travis Frederick, and none of them gave him a first-round grade.
None of them even considered Frederick a quality second-day prospect. One club had Frederick in the fourth round, two more had him as a fifth-rounder, one had him in the sixth round, and the final club graded Frederick as a "borderline" sixth- to seventh-round pick. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has already committed to starting Frederick as a rookie, probably at center or right guard. |
Re: Cowboys’ Jones boys deflate their own football people with draft ‘philosophy’
I've been hearing quite a bit on the philosophy of drafting a guard in the first round since the Lions passed on Chance Warmack at #5. One side argues you never do it, the other states with the new CBA and lower rookie salaries, it's not the taboo it once was.
I guess it all goes back to BPA, position of need and if the team has a good history of developing players, but this pick does smack of Jerry Jones meddling with the team ... again. |

The best thing to ever happen the the Cowboys is Jerry Jones. They will never win again.

Watching the Cowboys implode on a yearly basis is almost as exciting as pulling for the Saints. Almost.

I do enjoy watching the Cowboys flop.

I heard this morning on the NFL Network that Jerry told Romo he needed him to be like Payton as in being there before training camp working, etc.
Something like that. I was running back and forth getting ready. All I can is , to work for Jerry Jones, torture. A heart attack everyday. Why would anyone bother putting up with that man. |
