Walter Payton's mom dies after illness
Alyne S. Payton, the mother of late NFL Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton, has died in Jackson, Miss. She was 87.
Family members say she died in the hospital Monday after a long illness. Officials with Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home say services are scheduled for Friday at Black's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson. Burial will be Saturday in Resthaven Cemetery in Columbia. Alyne Payton's husband Edward died of an aneurysm in 1978. Walter Payton, who played college football for Jackson State and starred with the Chicago Bears, died of liver disease in 1999. Alyne Payton was a former member of the board for the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. Survivors include a son, Eddie, also a football standout at Jackson State; and a daughter, Pam. Payton came to our home for a Zulu Club casino night. Me being about 10 years old, wasnt quite sure this was the cat I'd seen on tv. So anyway.. he signed, then handed me a card. I promptly wandered off to listen to a Richard Pryor record in my closet with my cousin. Now, just ask me whatever became of that card... I was far more interested in scavenging the shrimp mold and sandwiches after-party
By all accounts growing up, he was a model dude. I hope both he and his mother have reached the promised land |
