Garrard decides to call it quits due to balky knee
The Jets’ quarterback situation just got a little clearer. David Garrard, who was brought in to compete for the Jets’ starting quarterback job, has told teammates that he’s leaving the team.
“Having to call it quits. My knee is not holding up,” David Garrard wrote in a text to Adam Schein of SiriusXM NFL radio (via Pro Football Talk). “Continuing to swell after practices. Limiting what I can do.” This is clearly a bummer for Garrard, whose comeback attempt with the Dolphins last season was thwarted by arthroscopic surgery during training camp, causing him to miss the entire preseason. He was released by the team on Sept. 4. If this is the end for Garrard, he leaves the game with 89 career touchdown passes and 16,0003 passing yards. He was a Pro Bowler in 2009. The Jets still have four QBs on the roster: Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said he wanted to see a quick end to the competition. Thanks to Garrard’s departure, that just got easier. Sanchez is probably secretly breathing a tad easier as well, as Garrard was his main competition to either start or be the main backup behind the rookie Smith. Laces Out – NFL on FOX Blog |
