QB David Carr isn’t paranoid working with rookie Ryan Nassib: ‘Oh, I would’ve freaked out 10 years ago’

New York Giants backup quarterback David Carr re-signed with the team earlier this offseason before the NFL Draft.

He had no idea the team would draft QB Ryan Nassib, but it comes with the territory.

Going into his 12th year, Carr knows the perils of professional football very well.

Carr was the first overall pick of 2002 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans and he started all but four games for the team in its first five years.

He took a beating in Houston before moving on to Carolina and finally the Giants, however, he’s one of the more experienced backup quarterbacks in the league, but job security is always paper thin.

Enter rookie Nassib, a talented QB that fell to the fourth round and the team found too much value in the Syracuse product to pass on him.

Carr doesn’t feel intimidated or slighted; he’s been around too long for that, instead he'll do what’s best for him and the team, being a good teammate.

He says that time has taught him to have confidence in himself, but he wasn’t always like that.

“Oh, I would’ve freaked out 10 years ago,” Carr said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

“But I’ve been here 12 years now. You just see things differently.”

“I honestly am trying to help Ryan,” Carr said. “It makes me better too. . . . This is my 12th year. There’s a lot of things I can teach him. I’m going to be done playing and he’s still going to be playing at some point. Hopefully he can look at me as the guy who can help him and not hurt him.”

“In that regard I’ve kind of grown up a lot,” he said. “I was a selfish player for a long time. Guys struggle with that all the time — think about themselves, think about what they can get out of situations.”

“That’s a decision they’ve got to make,” Carr said. “That’s what coach Coughlin said to me after they drafted him: ‘Just let us make the decisions. Go out there, use your experience, be the player we know you are and let us worry about all that.’

“That’s my mind-set anyway. I can’t control what they decide to do at the end. I’m just going to put my best foot forward and see what happens.”

QB David Carr isn

I am in a way quite impressed by a guy like David Carr. Came in to the leauge and was supposed to be great for an expansion team and just had to try to survive behingd a horrible line and thus by many got considered a bust. Still he manages to make football a living, in the NFL 12 years later.

Carr was rushed into action way to soon.
