Our GM and front office's precise talent is, scouting and signing hidden gems and high quality (and thus less expensive) players in the mid to later rounds, and making really smart, low cost free agent acquisitions (Sproles, Shockey, Vilma, etc). The Saints have been doing this for years, which is a perfect salary cap compliment to a highly paid, high value QB like Drew Brees. The Falcons' front office's MO is to reach down to pick up whatever shiny glittering objects that happen to catch their attention that minute. Falcons fans are STILL debating Ryan's "elite" status after every Falcons' loss and always will be, even after he is retired. It's been proven time and again, that Drew adds value when he makes lesser players perform better by being around him; no one ever says that about Ryan, it's all "star power" over in Atlanta, Julio, Tony, Roddy, Turner and they are about to find out long term that it's not a winning recipe.

Thanks for the essay dude... I just meant having to let players walk in free agency and probably restructuring contracts of players to sign other players. You know, the stuff we deal with now that we pay top dollar to our QB.

Glad this was done before it got to be a distraction.

Having a "bottom third" QB like 'Young' Ryan only works under specific circumstances.

And the first and most important stipulation is that you don't overpay.

The money saved with an inferior QB must be spent elsewhere.

Folks, let's be honest here.

The last time the Falcons had a legitimate shot at the SB was 2006.

I guess I am.

Bottom third? I don't think so...

He's not elite, but not as bad as you're making him out to be. He's not young anymore either.

I think we have as good a chance as anyone to bring one home.

I'm having an awfully hard time trying to remember when I said 2012 was a SB or bust year. I don't even feel like this is a SB or bust year.

Shoddy Roddy has been screaming it the past two years; that was directed more towards the team as a whole(fans included).

He must have been throwing it around without knowing what it meant because it means 'now or never' and I feel like if we don't get it done this year, we'll still be a threat to win a title the next year. That's when I think it'll be now or never for us.

How did Vick give us more of a chance at a SB than Ryan?

All this talk about Ryan when, IMO, Bartowski was the best QB Atlanta ever had and their best shot at a Superbowl was in the late '70s/early '80s ... and that little foray, circa 1998, when they were actually in the building on official business,.

You know it to be true.

'Young' Ryan is one of those "low ceiling" guys.

How? He hasn't shown me that he'll stop getting better.

As a Falcons fan I think his contract was fair and exactly what anyone who doesn't have a better option available to sign or draft should expect to pay...lets be honest, the only QB's in the NFL that we would prefer to have over Ryan are not ever going to become free agents and last year's draft and the QB talent that came out of it is more of an aberration than the norm...it was the best QB class since the Marino, Elway class and there have been exponentially more busts than stars drafted in the first round as QBs...if you have a guy you can't replace you pay him big money.

any team that has a QB they can't replace through free agency or draft next year will pay more than we did...its just the nature of the beast imo.

Without Matt Ryan the team would fall apart.

You saw how improved he was last year from 2012.

Agreed, it just doesn't make sense to scrap a top 10 qb because he isn't elite.

Funny to see Falcon fans arguing amongst themselves and on a Saints board nonetheless...

Re: Falcons and Ryan agree to new deal

Ryan is far from stagnant...he showed the ability to connect on the deep ball for the first time since we drafted him and he continually makes the adjustments at the line of scrimmage that are the sign of an elite QB...lets not forget that Brees had 4 years on San Diego that he didnt show enough to them to be their starter and Ryan is going into his 6'th year and has proven to the team that drafted him that he has the potential to be the kind of QB Brees already is...to act like the only reason Ryan has had the sucess he has had over the past 3 years is because of his weapons is like saying the only reason Brees has excelled is because of having a great offensive coach to call his plays.

Were you watching the same games I watched? You saw no difference from 2011 to 2012?

You didn't see how much better he threw the deep ball? You didn't see how much more mobile he was? You didn't see how much farther the team got?

Poetic.

Yikes. Sounds like Saints fans- especially in the Aaron Brooks era. Just like those Saints fans of old, you're being a little too harsh. I completely understand the frustration.

A simpler way to put it may have been....

"He's not worth it, but what choice do we have?"

That's it exactly. Ryan isn't as bad as you think he is but he's not in the top tier of QB'S for sure. The Falcons don't have a better choice and if they lost Ryan it would set the organization back a few years. He is a good QB. They have a better chance with him than they do with whatever putz they can hope to get in free agency.

That said, the Falcons overpaid and everyone knows it. They were forced to pay him a higher salary because starting over with any other QB would scrap this season.
Also, Gonzalez almost certainly won't be back next year so the Falcons would lose two key players that had a big part of bringing the team a 13-3 season.

Yeah, there's no newspaper lining the floor or bird droppings everywhere ... it helps clear their heads and form coherent thoughts ... it's why I hang around,. Best board on the 'net, bet.

For Gonzo this is his second "now or never" season.
