Johnny Football Flips It

Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer didn't make Mike Pettine's decision any easier. Good luck picking a starting quarterback after this mess, Coach.

Manziel struggled to hit open receivers and added another gesture to his repertoire -- a middle finger apparently aimed at the Washington Redskins' bench -- while Hoyer completed only two passes in five series. Neither the hot-shot rookie nor the nondescript sixth-year veteran looked ready to claim a No. 1 NFL gig, failing to live up to the big-time setting of a final audition in the Cleveland Browns' 24-23 Monday night loss to the Washington Redskins.

Pettine has said he plans to announce his regular season starter Tuesday. His choices are Manziel, the No. 22 overall pick in the draft who completed 7 of 16 passes for 65 yards and an touchdown, and Hoyer, who was 2 for 6 for 16 yards.

I was not impressed with him on the field, or off. I can't help but get the feeling he is the next Tebow, massive wave of hype followed up by mediocre performance on the field, diminishing returns, and then a quick exit.

Saintsbro, good point about the fame tide.
Too bad some these people do not understand that the fame tide is not a good thing. I guess they cannot stop commentators from talking, but the guys should not participant in it and separate from it. The fame tide and the hype are career killers.

Boyer is starting qb. Manziel is not. Manziel will get his chance later. He needs to be best backup qb.
Hopefully, this is the end of the story. I am tired of hearing about it.

Naming no names, there are a handful of players that recognize they have one shot at fame/glory, endorsement, Opera life story, book deal, etc... And that one shot is more dependent on them being a great headline than a great football player.

I am not a fan of the approach but I can not fault a person for wanting to capitalize on his one shot at securing his financial future.

Cleveland I suspect is getting the drama that they wanted. Neither Hoyer nor Manziel is ready to start a regular season NFL game. Hoyer has been around 6 years with a total of 4 starts, Manziel is a rookie with out any experience. Neither are a solid choice for a starter IMHO.

The situation in Cleveland is either an engineered soap-opera, or an example of piss pore management.

Definitey the latter, and if it is also the former, they are doing an excellent job.

They have a life-long Steeler fan as an owner, and I think he is being indicted. They play musical chairs with coaches & FO, and have had 30+ qbs's and zero playoff games in the past 10 years.

I almost feel sorry for the Brown faithful fan base. They deserve better.

Manziel could possibly be a decent NFL QB if he had time to develop with some solid pieces around him. He's got none of that. Manziel is probably gonna start at some point this year. If he even looks OK I'm impressed. They've got very little talent on offense.
