FCC Mulls Banning Redskins Name
September 30, 2014
The Federal Communications Commission is weighing whether to ban TV stations from saying the name of Washington's football team. A law professor filed a petition with the agency earlier this month, claiming that the name "Redskins" violates federal rules barring any indecent content on broadcast television. At a press conference Tuesday, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said he is reviewing the filing. "We will be dealing with that issue on the merits, and we will be responding accordingly," Wheeler said. The FCC chief said he personally finds the term offensive and urged the team to change the name. But he didn't say whether he thinks it is illegal. Re: FCC Mulls Banning Redskins Name
Has there been a poll showing how Native Americans feel. The only one's I've seen are a few years old and overwhelmingly (85% or so) said the term Redskins wasn't offensive.
But like I said, those were few years old. Anyone seen a recent one? |

"If voting made any difference they wouldn't let us do it." - Mark Twain I've said this before, fine, ban the Redskins but while you're at it take away Apache Helicopters, Chinooks, Tomahawk missiles...let's really see this thing through since the Federal Government murdered more Native Americans (including women and children) than any other group. Let's do this!!! |

Re: FCC Mulls Banning Redskins Name
Has anybody here read/researched this whole issue with the Redskins Moniker?!?
I'll begin to address facts in the next few posts on this thread for y'all's benefit... The plantiff in the case before the Federal Patent Office Commission (2-1 vote removed Redskins Patent, Copyrights) was Amanda Blackhorse; read this retort from George Will in the Washington Post "Amanda Blackhorse, a Navajo who successfully moved a federal agency to withdraw trademark protections from the Washington Redskins because it considers the team’s name derogatory, lives on a reservation where Navajos root for the Red Mesa High School Redskins. She opposes this name; the Native Americans who picked and retain it evidently do not." |
Re: FCC Mulls Banning Redskins Name
^^^ I did not know that, :). When I looked into it a few years ago, it did seem like it was only a small number of tribes calling for this.
IDK, I think they're going about the whole mess the correct way (the legal process) without getting the FCC involved,. I guess I'd have more respect for the FCC if they'd show a little more interest in some of the stuff I find offensive on radio, television, satellite, cable, et... but then that would probably be "over-regulation",. |
