NFL to replace Rookie Symposium, league announces

The NFL has done away with its annual Rookie Symposium in favor of team-run rookie transition programs, the league announced on Tuesday.

The Rookie Symposium was the NFL's version of rookie orientation for 18 years, open only to drafted rookies and held in Ohio, usually over the span of four days.

It became infamous when news leaked that Hall of Famer Chris Carter told rookies in a speech to have a "fall guy" ready in case they got in trouble with the law.

The Symposium will be replaced this year with the Rookie Transition Program, which will be hosted individually by all 32 teams and open to all rookies.

This is known in the legal field as a "CYA" move -- by delegating it to the individual teams, instead of handling it themselves, the league front office can be Sgt. Schultz when a rookie player gets into trouble. Didn't see it, didn't hear it, not our problem....

Giving the rookies a league orientation, seems like a smart, liberal, feel-good, almost humanitarian thing for the league to do -- help them with their transition, teach them to be smart with their money, be upstanding young citizens, role models, and all that. Until the rookies get into trouble, or Chris Carter blabs his mouth -- then it's suddenly NOT the league's business to teach or instruct rookies anymore!!!

Ridiculous hypocrisy right there on display. This whole thing has Goodell's inept bumbling fingerprints all over it.
