Ex-Saints DT Akiem Hicks celebrates NFC title game: 'I'm glad they lost'

The New Orleans Saints missed out on Super Bowl LIII, in no small part to a botched officiating call late in the game that is still being litigated. Observers from all sides have agreed that it was a huge error, but one petty soul found it in himself to celebrate it: former Saints defensive lineman Akiem Hicks. Hicks explained his stance to Chris Perkins of the Athletic at the Pro Bowl.

“I have no love for the Saints,” Hicks explained. “I think that was a great call. I’m glad they lost.”

Hicks was an underwhelming former draft pick of the Saints, and was eventually traded away to the New England Patriots for reserve tight end Michael Hoomanawanui. He never put up productive stats as a pass rusher and was a starter on some of the worst defenses in NFL history. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick also declined to re-sign Hicks, causing him to land with the Chicago Bears, where he made the Pro Bowl. Hicks has benefited from the coaching he received in those stops to become one of the most-disruptive defensive linemen in the NFL; he’s collected 23 sacks and 53 other quarterback hits in three years with Chicago.
